Well here is the set list. Enjoy! Apparently, Bob's been doing too much touring with them and needed a rest, so Carolyn is taking up some of the slack, and learning to do house sound. I got to work with her at the Club Passim shows on Saturday evening. I had all their albums, had made it to three opening/short set shows, and had heard half a dozen tapes of their full-length concerts that other luckies has been to and passed on; but this, unsurprisingly, surpassed them all. EFO's music is witty, self-aware, socially conscious, and graceful; their harmonies are full-bodied and innovative; but it's their interaction on stage, the power of the people themselves working as a unit, that makes their show a special one. This night's show seemed infused with non-stop energy, which could have been chalked up to the fact that this was the last stop of their tour--or to the espressos they all claimed to have doused themselves with. At one point, mouth agape, I wondered if Eddie had just mainlined caffeine. *smile* There's no way an EFO show could include *all* the pieces I most wanted to hear, since that could easily make up two sets--nothing like a prolific band!--but as usual, they hit several of my favorite favorites and rewarded us late-nighters with some unusual trinkets. They opened, to my delight, with "Gravity" and moved into "Omar's Got a Problem" and "I Don't Think I Know Me" with the confidence and clarity. After that, though, I think they abandoned their latest studio release for earlier-and-still-green-pastures of songwriting. "The Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown" was its usual dynamo of a delivery, the a cappella verse garnering the same cheers it usually deserves and gets; and I've never yet heard a "Bookends" or "This My Town" that I didn't love. There were one or two new pieces I didn't know, including what I *think* I remember them intro'ing as a Lyle Lovett piece--not "If I Had a Boat," to my surprise; I actually preferred it, and it was lovingly rendered. I've never enjoyed the studio version of "Catchers, Drummer, Anchormen," but suffused with the warmth and Julie's earnestness, it carried itself much better live. The most unexpected song for me was definitely "Soup Comes Cheap," which Robbie intro'd as a piece he'd written while living in Salem, Mass (and therefore appropriate for this Boston show, but not something they normally performed), nicknamed "Witch City" (despite the fact that it's not the Salem of the witch burnings, which was actually, I think they said, Manchester-by-the-Sea or somesuch). It was touching, once I knew that the impulse in its creation had been living across from the city's soup kitchen. My favorite piece, though, that I don't normally hear of being performed was definitely "Blue Jeans." Robbie and Julie took turns with the lead, singing with straight faces and deadpan voices of the longing to escape the kind of work they did before being professional musicians. I genuinely hope being hung over that frequently wasn't a characteristic of their employment, though. ;) Bits that made this show individual? Well, Passim's stage is a bit small for a four-piece band with as large a drum kit as Eddie's, and they all had to restrict motion somewhat for that--Julie in particular couldn't back up and had to dance with a little more reserve than her normal style of little-girlishly kicking up her heels. So it was particularly hilarious when they spotted some passersby stopping to watch through the street-level big picture windows, dashed offstage, and played to the new audience. Robbie did some butt-wiggling just for them. They commented that they felt like they were in an aquarium and that we should all have just done the same--observed the show from outside and gotten it for free. They made my cousin's night when Mike observed that she, sitting in the front row beneath him, was mouthing the words--lipsynching but not disrupting them with loud, out-of-tune singing, as apparently had been the case in Philly the night before. (They actually ragged on Philly quite a bit as a tough gig.) They asked her name and half a dozen of us responded and cheered, which prompted them to tease her about having a fan club there. Mike couldn't possibly contain or behave himself for an entire show, and at one point he and Robbie got into a verbal skirmish containing not one, but BOTH forms of the lowest kinds of humor: puns, and bathroom jokes. You don't want to know, believe me. No EFO show would be complete without some high-energy pieces, and they finished with the "I Know You Rider" medley, which (for this harp enthusiast) was marvelous. I especially loved watching Mike play a duet between that handheld mic (which altered the sound of the harmonica--made it "old timey") and his normal one. The crowd kept clapping through the entire song. But the standout was definitely "The Bridge." I have never seen or even heard of Eddie going as completely crazy as he did during his solo during this. There was never a slow-down period: he took to those drums like an Energizer bunny on speed. (Which mollified me from being grumphy that he didn't pick up the colorful doumbec sitting on stage; I later found out it was Passim's own, but I still wanted a solo on it, a la his djembe lead-in to "Very Short Fuse.") For the encore, which was enthusiastically demanded, they came to the back of the room and gave us their beautiful arrangement of the Irish Blessing. The room was totally silent for it, as it well merits, and it was a touching end to a wonderful evening. I am sending you this note in the event that any of you are planning on seeing EFO at Blissfest in northern Michigan on July 12th. Bliss is an annual event that brings many types of music together in one spot over three days. Bands this year vary from Mezcla, a Cuban band, to Jonathan Edwards (layin' round the shanty, mama), to the Cajun sound of The Bonetones, and beyond. I hope that some loyal Midwestern Edheads will make the trek to Bliss to see EFO and the other great bands that will be playing. No, I do not work for Bliss (even though it might sound like I do, haha). I just want to get the word out to you all to come up to northern Michigan and have a great time listening to EFO and everyone else. You can more info about Bliss at www.blissfest.org Hope to see lots of EFO shirts walking around Bliss. See you there, Paul Brown ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V1 #2 ***************************
