And why doesn't everybody promise to NOT bitch about the artists that other people like? >> I will not share with you all some wonderful music. First of all, I must mention The Cocteau Twins. As the underground evolved from the ashes of punk (and no, BS like Blink 182 is NOT punk rock) Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Frashier basically invented the ethereal sound. The've probably put out 50 records and they're dreamy, beautiful, soundscapes are really consuming and have influenced everyone from The Sundays and the shoegazers to corporate stuff like Sarah Mclachlan. Next I suppose I wil mention some of the best shoegazer bands. Shoegazer (also known as dream pop) is essentially a style that developed from fusion of Jesus & Mary Chain-esque churning guitars, Sonic Youth franticism and Cocteau Twins a'la ethereal beauty. It began with My Bloody Valentine, and the album Isn't Anything back in 1988 and has continued with bands such as Rid e, Lush, Pale Saints, Chapterhouse and Slowdive, the five big dreampop bands. This style has been hugely influencial, as is evident in bands such as Cranes, Catherine Wheel, Whirlaway, Paige, Smashing Pumpkings, etc.... Now ofcourse, I must mention Sonic Youth, a band which really needs no introduction. SY basically takes on the harsh sides of whirly, psychedelic indie rock. They really created some of the most intense stuff in history, and they're totally unique. Every band from Pearl Jam to Creed to those fuckign idiots Korn have attempted to wrip them off, but ofcourse, they don't contain half the talent of SY and so, don't even come close. then ofcourse there is that perfect band of ethereal beauty and upbeat rhythmic intensity, The Sundays. God, they're the best band on the planet. Harriet Wheeler's voice is gorgeous. David Gavurin's guitar is so unique, chiming, heavenly ringing. The record's this band made far outweigh anything Ani difranco or just about anyone else has done. All hail The Sundays. I have so many more indie bands I must mention, The Pixies, The Arrogants, Boo Radleys, Curve, God, the list goes on. The website I made at webpage class should explain everything. http://www.chickpages.com/musicmania/frank.joe Now, ofcourse I want to talk about the greatest band of all time, 10,000 Maniacs. This band is sooo damn good. Incredibley unique, and totally solid. Both the singers, Mary and Natalie, have been unreal. Rob Buck has a completely unqiue guitar sound, soaring and brilliant. The thing is, their music is so artistic, and so conscience of history and culture that it just lifts you up to your higher self. Comparing Korn to this band is like comparing a tiny piece of shit (Korn) floating in toilet water to God (10,000 Maniacs). My previous computer class I constructed this page. http://www.chickpages.com/musicmania/10km I could go on, about the Cowboy Junkies, about Tom Waits, Joni Mitchel. I could talk about The Beatles, but you all know about them. Then there's Mary Margaret O'Hara, Big Star and ofcourse The Velvet Underground, but there's so little time. Oh, and I must also mention The Fairport Convention! ....and so much more. but I suppose I must stop somewhere. The fact remains, that's why it's so stupid to even begin to say that anything on TRL, be it that teenybopper shit that seth was talking about, or more teenybopper shit like limp bizkit, because there's so much that kicks its ass. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 20:59:11 EDT From: RedWoodenBeads@aol.com Subject: ET: Re: admiting it In a message dated 6/16/00 7:07:55 AM Pacific Daylight Time, owner-eda-thoughts-digest@smoe.org writes: << and then i realized, I really dont know of any. Different pieces speak to different people. I personally wouldn't know a Korn song if I tripped over it, but if someone finds value in it, gets something from it, or enjoys listening to it, than it has worth. AND for everyone that does like a song/poem/piece of art/play/movie/book there will be 5 people who hate it or think it's crap. That's why it's called art. There is no right and wrong here, just a bottomless pit of arguing and chest-thumping. If you dig it, do it! If you don't, don't. >> I disagree. Certain things do make good art. Whether or not a musician can play their instrument is a very clear basis on which this can be judged. The guys in Korn can't play worth bullshit, so there's the first indication that's they suck, whether you think they do or not. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 21:08:57 EDT From: RedWoodenBeads@aol.com Subject: ET: an interesting article by C. Now I read them all tried to understand where each of you is coming from and found everyone has some valid point hidden within their complaining. Myself personallly, Im a classic (and newer type) rock ran, steppenwolf, stephen stills, guess who, beatles, acdc, kiss, greatful dead, eagles, rolling stones, etc...etc..etc.. that music apeals to me...dont ask me why. But sometimes I stray from my musical selection and mix it up, a lil jewel a lil country and always a lil limp bizkit, korn, staind and some good ol punk. All of these music types apeal to me because of one thing...they all have something to say. No matter how they say it, no matter how much they are getting paid and no matter how they are presenting it they have something to say. Now you can argue with me but why. Even if they are covering something else someone did they still had the desire to and it must be for some reason or another. If someone got into music why do you think they did it? Not because they wanted to impress YOU because they had the desire to do so. And with that desire came their type of music and like it or not they are still expressing themselves to how they see fit. Just because Jonathen (lead singer of korn) and fred durst (limp bizkit) like to scream and say fuck many times doesnt make their music less valuble in the industry, and if it's in the industry someone else has to like it. I never understood the meaning of sell-out. What makes a person a sell-out? Because they are on MTV? Because they appeal to the masses? Because they promote something? Because they take money for doing what they love? I hate to tell you this but Jewel does it as well. Every band does it at one point or another. Its not selling out it's doing their job and reaching all types of media and people. There are some songs with korn I don't necisarily enjoy but the others are great. This argument is old and my point probably shouldn't even have been said. But The whole thing just blew my mind. ~Without music life is a journey through a desert~ Have appriciation for someone elses work...someay it maybe yours they are putting to throws...and it all comes down to the fact that it is theirs..and putting it in public is risky. I applaud all artists from jewel, to korn for being able to put themselves into their music and share it with the world. Your heart is an easy thing for people to step on and they are just making it easier. Listen with an open mind and if you don't like it still have the respect to understand why they are doing it. For them not for you. we act like just because it's on MTV or just because they play it on mass radio stations it doesn't have merit...but that how they get their music out there. Here you go I added my three favorite korn songs...Just read... ThaNx For The SpAcE =0) KERRy*bEAR * S E E D Every day it gets a little harder, can't seem to get away. I remember there's a certain place, a place I wish I'd stay. I feel so lost within -- pressured, I'm headed for that day. Just one thought in my head, really. Do I need this fame? Every time, god damn, I look at my son, I see something I can't be. Beautiful and care free, that's how I used to be. Like some god damn fucking freak, I'm so pressured, I'm so weak. Something takes a hold of me, something I can't believe. I lay in bed at night and wonder, should I go on this way? It's the only thing I really got for now, and it's called fame. Every time, god damn, I look at my son, I see something I can't be. Beautiful and care free, that's how I used to be. Like some god damn fucking freak, I'm so pressured, I'm so weak. Something takes a hold of me, something I can't believe. So I see this face so innocent and fine... and so fine. So I see this face and I realize it's mine. * B L I N D Are you ready? This place inside my mind, a place I like to hide, you don't know the chances, what if I should die? A place inside my brain, another kind of pain, you don't know the chances, I'm so blind, blind, blind. Another place I'll find, to escape the pain inside, you don't know the chances, what if I should die? A place inside my brain, another kind of pain, you don't know the chances, I'm so blind, blind, blind. Deeper and deeper and deeper as I journey to living a life that seems to be a lost reality that I could never find a way to reach my inner self esteem is low, how deep can I go, in the ground that I lay, if I don't find a way to sift through the gray that clouds my mind. This time I look to see what's between the lines! I can see, I can see I'm going blind. * F A K E I can't stand the sight of you. I can't stand what you put me through. Your life's a lie, that will you hide. Is it that terrible being you inside? I can't stand all the thought of you. I can't stand all the things you do. Why do you try, to justify? You are just too scared to be you inside. Let it all go. Look at you, all I see is a man too afraid to really be. I can't stand what you put me through. I can't stand even the thought of you. Your secret lies, that you hide. Is it that terrible being you inside? Let it all go. Look at you, all I see is a man too afraid to really be. You try so hard to be wanted. False emotions tells you fronted. I think being a person relies on one thing, be yourself, let you come through. You're too afraid to really be someone who isn't false and doesn't care to be. You're too afraid to really be. Be yourself let you come through. Fake! Let it all go. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 21:16:55 -0500 From: zerocool@sunlink.net (Niki) Subject: ET: sublime anyone? And Phish is all about the music... sure they have great lyrics, but the lyrics only take up a small amount of each song, and the rest is great music... with great riffs and solos. Their new album, Farmhouse is pretty good too. You know, you hardly ever come across a band, like Phish. They all know music well, and play it like their musical savonts. In most bands, there's like a great guitarist that outshines everyone, or something... but the guys in Phish are all equally great, which makes the music so much more pleasing to listen to.
