Smashing Pumpkins are my ultimate favorite band so before you make absurd comments about Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins, you need to get your facts straight. I agree about how the music business is as you described it, but there is no way you can say that about the brilliant genius' of SP! You should be implying your comments to Brittany Spears,Korn,Limp Biscuit,BSB and other teenybopper crap as that! I have read numerous articles, watched tons of interviews and been to concerts of SP. Their music is the definition of music! Billy has an intellectual depth to him that he includes in his mysteriously written songs. If he cared so much about the money then he wouldn't have gave 100% of the profits of their Adore tour to local charities where they played. His whole life is about music! He has been making up music since he was 14 years old and is now 33 and still enjoying just as much! Oh and can Billy help it if people like his music therefore go out and buy his albums? Another thing, why would their sound be incredibly unique, wherefore the artists who are money greedy all sound the same because they know the society likes that sound? Have you just not noticed that all the crap sounds the same except for the marvelous indie bands and of course SP?!! Joe explained is wonderfully well yet I could not stay silent. *Jes* as far as i, manager of an independent record store who does this for a living and is surrounded by music industry bullshit all day long, am concerned, the smashing pumpkins and billy corgan are a bunch of art snob wanker sellouts who do not deserve the adoration that they receive from their fans. these guys make FUCKING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OFF OF YOU. do you really think billy corgan is not part of the music business? he is as dependent on the industry as anyone else. his music is self-important obnoxious crap, and as far as joe's comment about broadening the scope of alternative rock radio, that wasn't his doing. that's what was selling in the early 90s, so that's what the stations played. period. the record business is a BUSINESS, moreso than i think a lot of us allow ourselves to believe. at the end of the day, this business is about money. period. that's why you see people like dr. dre talking about how napster is "taking food off of his children's plates." these artists have been duped by the system into believing that they actually DESERVE all the money they make. whatever happened to integrity and love of sound and constructing beautiful noises out of instruments crafted by human hands? we should all make the extra effort to support musicians and labels and retailers that are actually in this to enjoy a record instead of making money off of one. better yet, go get an instrument and some friends with instruments and make you own music. music is about love and sound and ritual and enjoying one another and celebration and all things beautiful. it's about expression and joy and pain and the marrow of life. it's not about billboard charts and celebrity and arena concerts and t-shirts and shit like that. find what you like and enjoy it for what it is, but realize that a whole lot of the stuff they shove down your throat is crap, and you have to see it as such. they have target audiences, marketing departments, and all sorts of trickery to sell you a record. the smashing pumpkins have promotional support and advertising schemes and shit just like britney spears or the backstreet boys. don't make it sound like it's four people in a van when smashing pumpkins tour, it's not. it's private jets and limos and luxury hotels and guest appearances on the simpsons. thanks to anyone who read this far, i need to vent sometimes. ben >> >> *Jes* ***Turning tears into oceans, words into sand*** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 00:28:55 -0400 From: "Kevin B. And why doesn't everybody promise to NOT bitch about the artists that other people like? This whole Korn thing is tedious. Lighten up, people. I'm one of those american teenagers the musical industry targets and relies on, I just catch what's on the radio, and if it interests me enough i'll buy the CD.. sometimes i used to go to best buy and listen to those display CDs..bought a modern jazz album one time.. guy became famous, or maybe I became more aware.. whatever the case, I lost that CD with a bunch of diana ross and temptations albums back in like 7th grade.. so my recommendation is half empty. that little known artist o mine? names... dont have one.. label? ha. i'd just say drive out somewhere, anywhere that street lights wont follow you....make sure you have a sun roof or you're going to be rolling down your windows and sitting on your hood- if your radio is new enough, push that neat little search button anywhere on the extreme low FM frequencies.. AM quality just sucks too bad.. anyway, find yourself a nice little station with one of those ultra cool in experienced DJ guys who pops his Ps and breathes too heavy, and just relax.. until you have to come home of course and the legal blood alcohol limit is about to be .08%, which ends up being like this: 120lb person, 1 beer, legally intoxicated. impaireD? probably not. maybe. that's what the law is for though, so there are no judgement calls. just law. btw, See A Civil Action w/ John Travolta, and if you haven't already... Bic Runga Joy Eden Harrison Frank Black(and The Pixies) I'm really into this band that no one used to know, called Ben Folds Five, it's pretty cool cause I've been a fan since their first album, and then when 'Brick' hit huge and they were in the Top 40, I couldn't get into the tour stop here in St. Louis, it sold out in a second. In comes their latest album, with no real "radio singles" and the concert here for that tour didn't even sell out. :) It was crazy! Umm, yah, so that's my list for now at 2:40 AM. Also, when I'm depressed Jewel usually depresses me more. Listen to POY, or get some Angelfood that has 'Carnivore' on it, not really what I would classify as "happy stuff". :) Namaste, Jon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 08:57:19 -0400 From: Kristin A Maynard Subject: ET: I'm back and a new poem Hey guys, I used to be on this list a long time ago as Beccahusky1@juno.com, my account kept getting all messed up and hacked into so now I'm back under a new name. Yeah, you have 4 songs, and not one of them say the F word... lemme guess. "Twist" (lyrics "twist...twist...twist...twist...twist....") and "Shoots and ladders" (lyrics "knick knack paddy whack give a dog a bone this old man came rolling home" sound familiar? they cant even write their own non cursing song, if the song has more than one or two words in it, or more than just gibberish) Those are TWO of the VERY FEW songs that don't have the F word. ever hear "K@#0%"? "need to"? "clown"? "faget"? "ass itch"? i can keep going. remember, i've listened to hours and hours of my friend blaring korn in my car stereo, because she doesn't like anything i listen to. so i let her choose the music, even though i hated it. >From: "Seth D.
