It's all too spoiled..... I've been getting into this new band lately, they're from L.A. They're on the verge of beign signed to 4AD (Lush, Pale Saints, Throwing Muses, The Pixies, Belly). They're called Paige. Brian Kurser (bass guitar), Mike Naz (guitar), Marcie Flores (vocals) and Kerry McPherson (drums). They're a real unique, dark indie rock band with ethereal overtones, God they rule. They have put out to EP's, the newest one being called DOMICILE. http://www.theblacklodge.com/paige/ no longer cradled in gravity's memory still in and spinning in spiral drifts of endlessness spinning in torment into the garden of light - -Pale Saints "A Thousand Stars Burst Open" http://www.chickpages.com/musicmania/joepages ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 16:44:03 GMT From: "~* cymbaline *~" Subject: ET: More "indies" Here's other people/groups I love, that most likely you may not have ehard of. (some of you may have, though) Quickspace - weird psychedelic trip-hop from England. Perfect for getting stoned to, lol. David Poe - he's sorta folky/rock. He's really cool. "Blue Glass Fall" is a great song David Rice - another guy who plays acoustic guitar, among other thnigs. His album is really laid back... Mary Lou Lord - she's a chick w/ a sweet voice and great songs. She's based out of Boston (I think?) Foam - a rock band, that i think deserves some recognition... "Rollercoaster" and "Memories" are really good songs. Pilgrimage - Its a celtic (or kinda celtic) group... really nice. Hurricane #1 - a brit-pop group... sorta Oasis style. Wheat - they're just good, IMO Rialto - I think they're brit-pop. they're good too. Ebba Forsberg - she's really good... Momus - sorta strange. "His majesty The baby" is really twisted, and he sounds like he's insane. If you're interested in hearing new music before anyone else, or cool indie music, I'd check out the magazine CMJ New Music Monthly. Its a great magazine, and includes a 18-21 track CD every month w/ new artists/indie artists. Thats where I got alot of the music i listen to now. from getting CMJ. They're kinda raggae pop rock stuff. They're really cool though. I found out about them through one of the band member's brothers, Kedree. We were in a play together and I was supposed to go see THe Flow in concert a couple days ago but I didn't. www.theflowmusic.com Court ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 15:08:50 EDT From: "Kevin Pease" Subject: Re: ET: More "indies" "~* cymbaline *~" writes: >Mary Lou Lord - she's a chick w/ a sweet voice and great songs. But yep, she started off in London, then Boston, singing in the subways. She's quite good, although her voice does grate on me at points, when it gets a little too whispery-sweet... >Ebba Forsberg - she's really good... She's Swedish, I think. One of her songs, "Lost Count," struck me as great when I heard it... the rest of her CD is fair, but didn't do a ton for me. Not a bad CD, but not one of my favorites. >If you're interested in hearing new music before anyone else, or cool indie >music, I'd check out the magazine CMJ New Music Monthly. >Its a great magazine, and includes a 18-21 track CD every month w/ new >artists/indie artists. I'll second this emotion. I'm not an unconditional fan of "indie" music, because I think a lot of indie bands I've heard are probably indie simply because they're just not very good musicians. But CMJ pretty consistently finds a good chunk of the _underappreciated_ indie music out there. :) It costs about 30 bucks for a year's subscription, I think; speaking personally, I find at least one or two musicians on their CD each month that I think are worth tracking down a CD from... As far as the magazine, I think CMJ has actually got some pretty good interviews, stories, and reviews, but I have to confess that I find the writing a little patronizing at times, with a remarkably "we're superior to anything 'major label' because we're independent" bent that just irritates me. Well worth the subscription, though, if you have a few extra bucks to spend a month. I adore Heather Nova's music, I think she's one of the more amazing singers I've heard... highly recommend her to anybody. I liked Joydrop's "Beautiful" enough to pick up the "Metasexual" CD... which I was kind of disappointed with, I don't think that most of the rest of the CD was as good as the one song... Guster is really cool, definitely love the bongos going on there... :) Parachute & Goldfly are both pretty good, but I find myself liking "Lost & Gone Forever" more than the other two, and would recommend that one to anybody as a solid introduction. And, as for Jeff Buckley, heard of him, never heard him...
