Okay, so this camp is Not Back To School Camp, a camp for "unschoolers" in Eugene Oregon, founded in 1996 by the author of a great book "The Teenage Liberation Handbook". This year, for the first time there were two sessions of camp, and Samara and I both went to the second. I went last year, and had a great, amazing time, but not as incredible as this year by any means. Camp consists of eating healthy food, talking to tons of beautiful, incredible 13-18 year olds (plus staffers), workshops where you can do everything from collage to swing dance, learning almost everyones name, talking to women in women's meeting, and talking about relationships to guys in a "Gender Blender" or two, crying, lots and lots of hugs, flings, best friends, & staying up late. I met people I know I'll be close friends with for life - Samara, a girl named Corale with a shaved head and bangs who's a wonderful listener, totally cutesy and beautiful, funny, & smart, Cory a boy who told me I was his best friend who smells good, gives amazing hugs, has beautiful eyes, willing to talk to me about anything and cryed with me when we said goodbye, Carsie a younger girl who's sweet, wonderful and has an amazing voice, Evan who's the breathing embodiment of my type and super-cute and super fun, and many, many others. I miss them all but being at camp is amazing... I'm not really sure how to explain the amazing part... You can fall asleep anywhere, just being there without their being weird connatations. I went to sleep cuddled under the stars with Corale and Cory one night. if you need a hug, people intuitively know and give you one. There's ALWAYS someone to talk to, any hour of the night, anytime. Just walk up to someone and start spilling and you're sure to get a good listener and a good response. I don't know what else to say, except that it's the healthiest, most beautiful enviroment I can imagine... - -Summer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Sep 1998 15:28:58 EDT From: Lucky997@aol.com Subject: ET: me Hey guys- I was going to write a poem as an introduction but nothing was coming out right, so I decided to do this fill in the blank thingy...oh by the way, Sam and Summer- your camp experience sounds amazing, I definitely want some more details : ) FULL NAME: Melissa LOCATION: Manalapan, NJ (it just might be the most boring place in the world, I can't wait to move to NYC or Boston or San Francisco) AGE: almost 16...I'm an old soul though : ) BIRTHDAY: 10/17...soon!...everyone better have their presents ready : ) SIGN: Libra HAIR COLOR: dark brown with this natural blond streak underneath EYE COLOR: brownish-greenish-hazel HEIGHT: 5'1" WHAT SPORT(S) DO YOU PLAY?: sports? Hey now! :) I'll have you know that Millbury is a very sophisticated, polished town. Even our cows are cultured. :) Actually, I have to say, compared to another town nearby, we are pretty sophisticated. Any town where people keep a cow as a housepet, well... that's pretty strange, if you ask me. And I swear, I am not making this up - I was running a cross-country meet in this town once in high school, and I was running by a house... out in front was this big dog-house-looking thing, with the name "Buttercup" stenciled above the door. Tied to the tree in the front yard just in front of this dog-house was, and again, I swear I am not making this up, A COW. That's right, a cow, you know, "Moo, moo, moo, moo" - that sort of cow. They had a cow in their front yard, it had a big dog-house-type thing with it's name stencilled on it, and it was tied to a tree on a little run, like you would put a dog on. Now *THAT*, to me, is a pretty weird, inappropriate, and awful smelly housepet. I just don't necessarily agree with the idea of keeping one as a house pet. :) And honestly... I wouldn't want to be the one to have to keep the cow clean. I've seen the sheer volume of waste they produce... and it's a lot. Let's not forget the methane they produce, either. :) I just don't think cows were made to be treated like dogs, with dog houses & runs and stuff. :) >It runs with a herd of roughly 100 at her house, but sometimes >she RIDES it!
