Well, the budwiser part is a hoax (and the "destroy your puter " part too..) as for drinking all of your beer... that may be true, mine has come up missing..... No really though, there is a virus out there by the name of Buddylst... When it is activated it will read as "buddy list" and for AOL users, may be hard to find.... What it does is steal your password and screenname, and sends it in a email to another account. but after that, it deletes that message from your "sent mail" folder, and disables the little box that comes up when you send mail.. you know the "you mail has been sent" box... I'm guessing that this virus only works on aol.. anyway, it has about seven layers.. (in other words, when you execute the virus for the first time, it creates seven folders spread all over, and that way if you or your virus checker deletes one of them, the virus is still there, and it just makes another folder that you deleted...... It has been awhile since I got that virus, but some of the folders I remember were: buddy list (in aol) winhelp (in windows) registryreminder (in windows) you really have to delete all seven of them before you restart your puter, or you'll have to just go through it all again. if you think that you have a password stealer in your system, and are not sure if it has been sending your password, then set your mailbox to send all your mail to your personal filing cabinet. That way, after you sign on, you can check your PFC, check your "sent mail" folder and then you will know.... of course that is for AOL... anyway take care rowdy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 13:13:04 -0500 (EST) From: Seth Fulmer Subject: Re: ET: Fwd: Fw: THIS WAS PUT OUT BY THE COMPUTER GURUS AT MY WORK! Ok peoples, For now, just don't care if it was a hoax and I'll prove that it is one. #1...Suppose the email is true and Hell Inc., I mean Microsoft is really giving out $245(or somewhere in that range) per email. They would be broke financially faster than a hacker through a Windows 95 computer. It would be STUPID for them to do that. #2...I did notice that it said if you're running Microsoft Windows. Although it would be possible to put code into Windows to look for this ONE email, the Artificial Intelligence programming needed to READ the email to determine that you were sending THAT email and didn't like add a space or accidently hit the comma while sending it would be like trying to turn Water into Wine. It can be done but not without divine intervention...and it takes a real Masochist programmer to do it. I admit I like to "re-invent the wheel" when I program, but I'm not totally stupid. #2.5...Even if Microsoft was stupid enough...WHY would they put forth the money to PAY programmers, accountants, tax-dudes, et al. to make so that the only outcome would be that they GIVE MONEY to people and not take money in. #3...Now comes the Humanitarian, cool reason :) You're REALLY lazy if you would do something for only $245...I'm a college student and admittedly I also have a job but still...$245 is NOTHING! Go at least for the bigger $$$. I really think the person who made this spam needs to re-evaluate what sort of income they want in life. I won't even consider something like this until it's got at least 4 or 5 digits in the $$ figure :P Basically I'm just pointing out that ya gotta think about these things a bit from the other point. If someone wants to give me money on the street and they appear disheviled(sp?) and their clothes are all torn up...I will not accept it because the other person should have it...even if I'm dying of hunger, thirst, frostbite, etc. Umm..well I think that's all I have to say on that. I hope you have a Great Day. Take care and Have a Great Day! :o) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 19:27:44 -0500 From: "Kevin B. I you're going to annoy us, at least do us the favor of formatting it nicely so we can be annoyed faster & easier. We're busy people, if you expect us to read your proposal fully, make it eye-catching. :) Kevin - ---------- Kevin Pease kbpease@concentric.net ICQ UIN: 3106063 AOL IM: kbpease ". . . no I don't need a miracle, but I could use a push in the right direction . . . Technically, this wouldn't be *too* hard, but it would require that you: 1. have a Microsoft email program (or something that saves email in a standard format), and that you have a live network connection. You could add a pretty simple script to scan through emails as they come in, and if they match certain criteria, fire off another email to someone else. In fact, for Unix systems, there's a utility called "procmail" that does exactly this. It wouldn't be too hard to figure out how to do something similar on Windows. I guess the biggest question would be, why in god's name would you want to do this? :) > #3...Now comes the Humanitarian, cool reason :) You're REALLY > lazy if you would do something for only $245...I'm a college student and > admittedly I also have a job but still...$245 is NOTHING! Not so! I have a full time job, and I can say without a doubt that I'd still get up on some of that if I could make $250... that's most of 1 month's car payment, or a month & a half of student loan payments, or 2.5 months of commuter rail passes, or about a month of buying lunches at work, or at least a month's worth of a social life. :) If doing something for $250 is lazy, call me slothful. :) Kevin - ---------- Kevin Pease kbpease@concentric.net ICQ UIN: 3106063 AOL IM: kbpease ". . . no I don't need a miracle, but I could use a push in the right direction . . . He was a little bit more then a friend for sometime, but it didn't amount to anything, because it was all internet based, and I figured he had someone at home too, anyways, in this letter he talked about how he bottled his feelings up, and how someday it's going going to catch up with him. He went on to say that he was going to isolate himself so he could figure things out. He sent this email to about 5 people including me. To each person he wrote a speical message. This is what mine said: Rebecca, you must be strong, above all. Strength means courage, integrity, honesty, and temperament, but don't let it make you hard. Stay sweet, and keep your head up. Re-reading his letter at this moment I'm almost crying. Maybe by the end of this email I will be. I just feel this pit at the bottem of my stomach. He talked about bottling himself up, I think that's what I've been doing. I've been telling myself I'm fine. Last winter I was almost at the point of suicide. I know I don't want to die. I konw that, so don't worry. I just feel like shit, and I needed to get these feelings off my chest ------------------------------ End of eda-thoughts-digest V2 #318 **********************************
