I've been getting some complaints (and have seen another rash of peop[le leaving this list again) and have reviewed the last few digests and I think the complaints ARE warranted to some degree. A rather large percentage of the emails to the EDA-thoughts list HAS been what should really be private emails that and have no reason to be sent on to this list. So, all I am asking is that each of you think about this statement before you hit the send button: "Is this email I am about to send to the list something that more than a select few of the regulars on this list would want to read, or should I just send it privately to this/these person(s)?" If you then think it merits being on the list, then by all means send it on :-) If not, then please send it privately to one or a few. I trust the judgement of you all on this, however I just felt I had to send this netiquette reminder to you too. Please, no one take this wrong or be upset. Please :-) It's just a simple caveat that I am asking you all to follow. Weigh each of your replies to the list as to whether or not it should be private and/or to a very select few, or to the whole list if many would benefit and/or enjoy the post. Since the largest percentage of subscribers to almost all mailing lists on smoe.org are AOL folks, and either their desires to not have to download attachments, or their parents (for the young ones, we have MANY of them :-) having set their email controls to not accept attachments (thus they bounce back to the list owner), or their inability to understand how to find it after it's downloaded (many don't), etc etc etc we've decided to set the digests to come out once the accumulative emails have reached 20K. (They also come out at midnight each night no matter how large the acumulation is, thus we sometimes get 3K digests) The reason I have it set at 20K and not 25K or 24K is that if the accumulation is sitting there at 22K or so, and the next post is 4K, BANG, we get a text attachment for AOLers. (which HAS still happened on this list, due to some folks 10K or larger posts of late) With the limit set at 20K, it seems to work fine (I have it at 18K on the Jewel list) > rather than send all of them separately, >because i hate having to check my mail everyday. I'm not sure what is meant here. However, if Jenny means what I think she may mean, no matter what size the digests are, everyone will have the same volume of email from this list each day. 80K in posts is 80K whether you have 4 digests at 20K, or 2 digests at 40K, or 8 at 10K. Did I misunderstand? If so, lemme know :-) In another post, Jenny also said: >hey, another suggestion to make this easier on us all is don't leave the whole >copied text in your post. I mean, most of you put the entire post you are >responding to in your post, and it takes up a whole lotta space. Just use the >key points or, don't use any at all, and it would make the list so much easier >to read. Thanx yes, she is 100% right here. (it's has been a *major* problem on the mad-mission list I run) Common netiquette asks that when quoting anothers' post, do not quote the entire post, unless it is absolutely necessary to make your point. It's best that you edit out all that is not needed, and only keep the stuff that is necessary to support what you say, or to let the readers see what you are responding to. That way, your reply to the list will be easier for all to read AND to understand and enjoy what you are saying. It also saves on smoe.org's resources. Each post to most lists on smoe.org are archived (saved) twice on smoe's hardware. Once in the digest, once individually. Thus, all uneccesary material in each post adds up quite quickly. Most list owners also archive the digests on their home computers for reference reasons and thus it adds up on their home systems too. For those of you that have web access, I suggest you check out this link http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/aol_netq.htm which is a very good article covering the basics of nettiquette. Fulmer" Subject: ET: Love, Hate, the American way, et al. Hola friends, angels, ____________(fill in with positive adjective), I recently moved out of my appt in Philly to another appt in Reading, and my phone was connected as of Thursday. What do I find when I log on to check my email but like more emails than I can count(1.2.4.3...Oooh, I lost count again)...It's a coincidence that the question was asked what one looks for in a woman(or a man in some cases). I was just getting out of seeing "Ever After" in the movie theatre waiting for my parents(the peanut gallery will be silent please), so I thought about what I would choose for a perfect mate. What I came up with after thinking about this for a while was that my ideal woman would have: 1.) a capacity for beauty 2.) boyish qualities while maintaining feminine traits, and 3.) a passion for life I never came up with what "the perfect me" was but I noticed a lot of the posts over the past week were about the topic of love, domestic abuse, and jumping on Jaime(or vice versa)[Did I get it all?]. I must say that if society needs to have their good deeds recognized to be popular, then there's a big problem right there. :)...I mean...I pick up trash, help the homeless daily, perform service in a service fraternity, as well as volunteer to help people at my job even when it's not "my job" to do so. A lot of it I don't get recognized for. My service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega(also called APO) requires 25 service hours. I tend to get 40 service hours and a lot more than that isn't even discovered because I won't "use it" as currency to get a requirement. There were remarks I noticed about Leo being a nice guy/bad guy/etc. I admit...I'm not fond of his acting(although if I must say so, he did grand in Titanic), but I'm not going to hold it to him for his roles in "The Man with the Iron Mask" or "Romeo & Juliet". It's an alternate person for him which is dictated by the story. As I doubt anyone on this list has seen/known him outside of the public spotlight, it's extremely difficult to pose any judgement on him. Ok, I understand that the topic wasn't on him per se but on good/bad guys in general. My basic problem(in life) has always been acting the right way. Yeah, I might be a jerk inside(or a nice guy...you'll never know), but as long as I act decent, that's the only thing that matters. I've always believed that a person is viewed by their actions but "is" their beliefs. Let's say for instance I'm a woman-hater(as someone has more than one occasion told me)...Now, that..IMHO..."is" me, however what others see me and who I am is who I act. If I go around and beat up women(verbally, physically, or socially/psychologically), that makes me a jerk. However, if I go around and despite my hatred, I help women...who cares that deep down I hate them...I'm doing a good deed....ya gotta take it in stride though. If someone goes and does a negative action, 2 positive actions, another negative and then 3 positives...I'd say (s)he is having a bad day/week/etc....If those actions are reversed(negative switches with positive), without an apology/explanation of any sort, I'd think the person was trying to influence me. But that's enough of my blah blah blah mumbojumbo. I certainly feel sorry for those children, women, even men out there that are victims of abuse/violence. I certainly hope that you can/were able to either leave the afflicteur or resolve the situation such that the afflicteur didn't/doesn't attack you any more. I can't(and certainly will not) claim to understand your situation as I've heard so many times and it's a pile of &@#$(IMHO). If you need someone to talk to though...like as a venting agent, I'm here :) I'd like to say that I liked the many songs, poems, etc that I read. I LOVE the songs "Emily" and "Jessica" by Jewel. Jessica brings tears to my eye whenever I hear it, and Emily is almost as sad(if not as much equally). I've also always been a fan of the song "I'll be". It's on the same page in my book as "Iris"(GooGoo Dolls). Kevin, your poem was quite excellent! You should write more to the list(in the form of poetry I mean). :) If anyone needs/wants any RA/Mp3 files for Jewel, I have a ton of MP3s for her. I have Emily in Mp3 and I think RA as well...and Jessica in only RA. I think that's it. I should be around for the most part so send your flames, peanut gallery comments, and mail bombs to me.
