Today's Subjects: ----------------- 2013 - my notes [JoAnn Whetsell ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2014 23:31:23 -0500 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: 2013 - my notes I don't usually order my list, but this year I will, at least in part. The top spot goes to: Laura Veirs - Warp and Weft. A truly outstanding record that I listened to at home, in my car, in my work car... Thea Gilmore - Regardless. A close second. I also toted this around with me a lot. The rest, in alphabetical order: Agnes Obel - Aventine Arcade Fire - Reflektor (The Suburbs was better, but Reflektor is excellent too. Love the different dance rhythms.) Daughter - If You Leave Goldfrapp - Tales of Us Juana Molina - Wed 21 (I'm so glad someone else mentioned this album. I LOVE Juana Molina, and she delighted again with more oddball quirkiness.) Sarah Blasko - I Awake Steve Martin & Edie Brickell - Love Has Come for You Honorable Mentions: Austra - Olympia (It took me a while to get this album, but once I tried listening to it in the car it clicked.) Hem - Departure & Farewell Karine Polwart - Traces (a really lovely album. I also got Karine's DVD, which I enjoy a lot too.) Laura Marling - Once I Was an Eagle Mazzy Star - Seasons of Your Day Sarah Jarosz - Build Me Up From Bones (Another album I was glad to see mentioned by someone else. Don't let the bluegrass label fool you; a lot of ectofolk would enjoy Sarah's music.) Vienna Teng - Aims (This one's still a bit hot and cold for me. There's a lot I love, but some of it I don't always connect to. On another day it might have been on the main list.) Biggest surprises: I don't think I've made it all the way through Sigur Ros's Kveikur even once. On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised by Capercaillie's At the Heart of It All. I thought they'd settled into bland mush forever. Instead they collaborated with other artists and sound reinvigorated here. Best Albums/Artists I discovered from Best of 2013 lists Elephant Revival - These Changing Skies London Grammar - If You Wait Bombino - Nomad Emma Louise - vs Head vs Heart Lanterns on the Lake (I'm looking forward to Until the Colours Run being released in the US on Jan 14) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #986 ***************************
