I tried looking for more Petula Clark on Spotify, and all I could find was this old stuff by some really old woman. I figured this Cut Copy Me song must be by some new young person who happens to have that same name and is crazy enough to publish under that name even though this older Petula Clark clearly had a big catalog. I didn't research further at the time. Today I had a little free time and looked up Petula Clark.. only to find that the 80 yr old Petula Clark is the very Petula Clark who created this Cut Copy Me song. AWESOME. I'm listening to her entire new album now. I'll never be as talented, but I sure do hope I'm as active & creative as she is when I'm 80. :) - -jessica On Fri, Dec 20, 2013 at 6:38 PM, Jon Wesley Huff wrote: > i was inspired to do my own list, with a twist. > > My Favorite 13 Tracks (from 13 favorite albums) of 2013, in no particular > order: > > > 1. I had heard of Petula Clark before (she's pretty famous for her earlier work) but I had no idea that she was still making music. And "Cut Copy Me" is a catchy little song. > On Fri, Dec 20, 2013 at 6:38 PM, Jon Wesley Huff wrote: > > > 5. Maybe this is in part because some albums didn't meet my high expectations (Laura Marling for one). Looking at this list though, I heard some fabulous music throughout the year. The first list of ten is what I submitted as my WPKN programmers list for the year. It's very arbitrary, and there might be ten totally different selections if I were to do it tomorrow. I regret not including Valerie June in the list. The second group lists much of the music I particularly liked throughout the year. This includes everything from David Lynch to string band music to African guitarists. Meredith Tarr and I will be looking back at 2013 and doing tag team radio on WPKN tomorrow afternoon between 4 and 7 p.m. EST. If you're near Bridgeport, Connecticut, you can find the station at 89.5 FM, and anyone can hear it at wpkn.org. Best, Valerie Richardson 1. Bombino: Nomad (Nonesuch) 2. Laura Veirs: Warp and Weft (Raven Marching Band) 3. Sarah Jarosz: Build Me Up from Bones (Sugar Hill) 4. Hem: Departure and Farewell (Waveland Records) 5. Cate Le Bon: Mug Museum (Wichita Recordings) 6. Yoko Ono: Take Me to the Land of Hell (Chimera Music) (Still great at 80!) 7. Lys Guillorn: Winged Victory (Little Cowgirl Records) 8. Juana Molina: Wed 21 (Crammed Discs) 9. Trixie Whitley: Fourth Corner (Strong Blood Records) 10. Julia Holter: Loud City Song (Domino Recording Co.) Also: Agnes Obel: Aventine (Pias America) Andrea Echeverri: RuiseC1ora (Nacional Records) Anna von Hausswolff: Ceremony (Other Music) Arnaldo Antunes, Edgard Scandurra & Toumani DiabatC): A Curva da Cintura (Mais Um Discos & Kartel Music Ltd). Brazilian cool with gorgeous Malian kora. A great combination. (Came out in 2012, but I just found it this year) Aoife O'Donovan: Fossils (Yep Roc Records) Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite: Get Up! (Stax) Brown Bird: Fits of Reason (Supply and Demand Music) Christine Salem: Salem Tradition (Cobalt Records) b I just learned about Christine Salem when she was touring earlier this year: bFrom RC)union Island in the Indian Ocean, the bpotent, B,indefatigable contraltob (The New York Times) B,Christine Salem is the greatest living champion of maloya, a nearly-extinct musical tradition rooted in the work songs and chants of the islandbs African slaves.b Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino: Pizzica indiavolata (Ponderosa Music & Art) I first heard about this group when they performed at New Havenbs Arts and Ideas Festival last summer. However theybve been performing since 1975. bCanzoniere Grecanico Salentino is regarded as Italybs leading and longest-standing traditional music ensemble, hailing from the Salento, the heel of the Italian boot, in Puglia.b Daughn Gibson: Me Moan (Sub Pop Records) David Byrne & St. Vincent: Brass Tactics EP (4AD). Also the best concert I saw this year! David Lang: Death Speaks (Cantaloupe Music). Featuring Shara Worden, Bryce Dessner. David Lynch: The Big Dream (Sacred Bones) The Devil Makes Three: Ibm a Stranger Here (New West Records) Fat Freddybs Drop: Blackbird (The Drop) Janel and Anthony: Where Is Home? (Cuneiform Records). Out of the Washington, D.C., area. From Nels Cline, bJanel & Anthony - guitars and 'cello respectively - play a haunting and humbly virtuosic form of music wherein the elements of electronics, looping, and lo-fi timbres live both in intimacy and in majesty in the same house as acoustic instruments and folk/blues-inspired melodies.b Instrumental. Janelle Monae: The Electric Lady (Bad Boy Records) Josephine Foster: Ibm a Dreamer (Fire Records) Laura Mvula: Sing to the Moon (Sony) Julianna Barwick: Nepenthe (Dead Oceans) Neco Case: The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You (ANTI Records) Nora Jane Struthers: Carnival (1-2-3-4-GO!) This year also saw the release of songs by Molly Drake, Nickbs mother, sung and recorded at home. bMolly Drakeb shows that Nickbs music didnbt spring up from nowhere.
