I love the idea of doing a Top 13 (and can easily fill it!) - along with supporting YouTube samples for those interested. (Thanks Jason, for the idea to include!) *Top 13 of 2013* 1. Lorde: "Pure Heroine" Thrilling new talent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaUokBzptmw 2. Camera Obscura: "Desire Lines" Yet another fantastic album of melancholy pop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p20TFS3sjO0 3. Glasser: "Interiors" A fascinating album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOVY0KDEzqw 4. Jack Johnson: "From Here to Now to You" Not really Ecto, but this is a joyful, laid-back, fun set of songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBWFUVq85gs 5. Maria Taylor: "Something About Knowing" Her best since "11:11" (maybe even better than that one!). I was actually shocked by how great this one is, start-to-finish, after so many mediocre releases. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAAzSdTaQJo 6. Ben Woods: "An Attempt to Fly" and "This Digital Horizon" The best ambient music released this year - and he released TWO albums! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13wGT8lY3vQ 7. Julianna Barwick: "Nepenthe" Exquisite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO8VGScinoM 8. HAIM: "Days Are Gone" Great indie-pop songs. Wilson Phillips for the new generation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TffpkE2GU4 9. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: "Push the Sky Away" Alluring, a bit sinister, a bit poetic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzTCbaZj5HA 10. CHVRCHES: "The Bones of What You Believe" Love their unique sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mTRvJ9fugM 11. Active Child: "Rapor" EP Short EP, but great songs, along with a memorable duet with Ellie Goulding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETon5Cj5Ghg 12. Molly Drake (self-titled) Released on vinyl this year, this is a collection of home-recorded songs by Nick Drake's mother. They were recorded in the 1950's in their living room. Molly's voice is so elegant, and the lyrics are simple and lovely. This is quite a treasure in my collection. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpz4-Qk6Png 13. Brooke Waggoner: "Originator" Much more energetic than her previous work. Fantastic lyrics and vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcJBxG4KGU4 *Other Great Releases* Hammock: "Oblivion Hymns" Mazzy Star: "Seasons of Your Day" CocoRosie: "Tales of a Grass Widow" Tanya Donelly: "Swan Series" Norah Jones & Billie Joe Armstrong: "Foreverly" Laura Veirs: "Warp & Weft" Josephine Foster: "I'm A Dreamer" The Blow (self-titled) (note: could have cracked the Top 13, but I just recently discovered them) Broderick & Broderick (self-titled) *Disappointments* Eluvium: "Nightmare Ending" Sigur Ros: "Kveikur" Sarah Brightman: "Dreamchaser" *From the Past...* This year for Record Store Day there was a vinyl reissue of Van Dyke Parks' 1967 album "Song Cycle". I was only vaguely aware of Van Dyke from his arrangements for artists like Rufus Wainwright, Joanna Newsom, and Laurie Anderson. But I was curious about this album, so picked it up on a whim. What a fascinating and challenging set of songs! I became obsessed with that album, and soon became even more obsessed with his 1972 album "Discover America". These two albums spent a lot of time with me in 2013, and I highly recommend them to brave, serious music-folk, like us here on Ecto. :-) Paul ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Dec 2013 14:42:35 -0800 From: jessica spurling Subject: Re: Best of 2013 ooh. looking forward to everyone's lists. personally i'm terrible, terrible at making such lists, so no promises that i may contribute one of my own. sorry :) but maybe... maybe i'll take some sort of a stab at it.. because 2013 was a pretty good year for me for new music. i do love reading everyone else's lists.. i always find new things that way. i know most things on the lists have been mentioned here over time but i don't always get around to checking everything out, and sometimes i might've listed to one or two songs and moved on but heading that something made one of these lists makes me give it another chance.. - -j On Wed, Dec 18, 2013 at 2:24 PM, Neile Graham wrote: > Hey, all-- > > We have interest.
