Dhakabrakha - a group from Kiev, Ukraine - a mix of SIgur Ros, Le Mysteres Voix de Bulgares, Jorane and Antony and the Johnsons--beautiful, haunting, moving, wonderfully weird. I discovered them this year, they have four albums available here: http://www.ukrainianmusic.net/ethno_group__dakhabrakha___light_en_2635prod.ht ml. > > My favorite is Light, but they're all worth getting (actually don't have Iahudky yet but will be buying it). None of them actually came out in 2013, but I didn't discover them until this year (thanks to Neal who brought them to Globalquerque) I saw these guys in Greece last year and they were probably my favorite discovery of the year. Couldnt believe our luck being able to bring them to Albuquerque this year. They were the runaway hit of our festival. Light is the only CD I have and I love it. The video Jeff posted is cool, but Im partial to this one, just cause it is from our show. Its the finale of their set. You can see how excited people were. There are so many great little touches form the performance. Ive watched it a ton of times and have all these favorite little moments. I love how one of the singers holds does this little wavy thing with her hand when she sings. I like how the cellist spins the cello at the end of the set so you can see all the beautiful inlay on her instrument. And how she doesnt really play any notes on her cello on this piece. Just grips the whole neck and saws away. And I think my favorite tidbit is the tambourine handoff at 2:15. Here, take this, I have to play a dumbek solo. Oh look, a tambourine, guess I may as well play it. :) Plus, they have the best hats. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkd-nahDboc They are touring the US again this fall. Dont miss them if they come anywhere near you. Their live performance is just breathtaking. > 5. The Alialujah Choir - beautiful haunting album with terrific video (another 2012 release I didn't discover until this year). > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_X29ja3BiQ These guys opened for and then played with the Portland Cello Project. They were a regular band and then sat in with PCP, combining to 11 or 12 people on stage. I didnt even listen to their CD until after the show and then slowly fell in love with it. > 8. Vienna Teng - Aims - a surprisingly uplifiting and upbeat album without being saccharine > http://viennateng.com/24021/ Vienna just played here last week as a trio. I must have seen Vienna about 10 times in the last 12 years and this was her best show yet. It was so inventive and everyone was having such a good time. Really elaborate arrangements and everyone playing lots of instruments, electronics and odds and ends. neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Dec 2013 22:37:35 +0100 From: Leonora Christina Subject: =?windows-1256?Q?top_13_of_?= =?windows-1256?Q?'13=FE?= My top 13 of 2013: 1.
