Dhakabrakha - a group from Kiev, Ukraine - a mix of SIgur Ros, Le Mysteres Voix de Bulgares, Jorane and Antony and the Johnsons--beautiful, haunting, moving, wonderfully weird. I discovered them this year, they have four albums available here: http://www.ukrainianmusic.net/ethno_group__dakhabrakha___light_en_2635prod.html. My favorite is Light, but they're all worth getting (actually don't have Iahudky yet but will be buying it). None of them actually came out in 2013, but I didn't discover them until this year (thanks to Neal who brought them to Globalquerque) Website: http://www.dakhabrakha.com.ua/eng http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72gB4Ch_auk&list=RDqOJjUjGs2xA 2. Phildel - The DIsappearance of the Girl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEXwpBoIq_Q&list=PL60sa1lw6jShXSb9PW-kxVdPLV2WHYncA A really compelling album by an artist of extreme vision--one of those albums that every time a song from her comes on on random you go "wow, who's that?" Definitely a unique talent with a stellar voice. 3. Sleeping at Last - Yearbook - 3 album compilation - beautiful heartfelt songs--reminds me a lot of Casey Stratton but voice is more accessible - songs were recorded/released (3 songs every month) over a 12 month period--originally released Oct 2010 - September 2011 but somehow just discovered it this year. Reminds me a lot of Tom McRae as well. 4. Eivor - Room - not as thrilling as Larva--mroe on the folk/trad side, but still a beautiful album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJL39PFjMXM&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PLuHbdFD97-lH_deO7W4wIjw6kFV5LXjC3 5. The Alialujah Choir - beautiful haunting album with terrific video (another 2012 release I didn't discover until this year). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_X29ja3BiQ 6. Lynn Miles - Downpour - one of the best folk singer-songwriters writing today. Simple but heartwrenching songs beautifully sung. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9neTswYdExo 7. Julia Fordham - Under the Rainbow - a best of rerecording of her hits, with just piano accompaniment--beautiful late night torch album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iApNGVKvHp4 8. Vienna Teng - Aims - a surprisingly uplifiting and upbeat album without being saccharine http://viennateng.com/24021/ 9. The Milk Carton Kids - The Ash & The CLay Beautiful folk duo album reminescent of Simon and Garfunkel--absolutely hilarious in a deadpan style live. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWgXJxZd-YQ&list=PLJ7QPuvv91JvW8F01n4goAhuptkngFLJ2 10. Little Green Cars - Absolute Zero - This is a wonderful quirky album with some beautiful moments http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmo9zGw1IX4 11. Diane Birch - Speak a Little Louder - a phenomenal artist, but her original songs don't live up to her covers, but still better than most artists out there. My favorite album of hers is still The Velveteen Age- an album of 80's covers including Siouxsie's Kiss Them for Me, This Mortal Coil's Tarantula, Peter Murphy's a Strange Kind of Love, and Sisters of Mercy's This Corrion. 12. I am the Morning - another 2012 release, remastered/rereleased in 2013. A bit Tori, a bit prog-rock, a bit classical. Overal a pretty album from a band from Russia (that sings in English) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnmkrcF3b6E 13. London Grammer - If You Wait An up and coming British band - remind me a lot of Florence and the Machine--unique, husky female voice with compelling arrangements. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #971 ***************************
