Today's Subjects: ----------------- Anna von Hausswolff [Karen Hester ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2013 21:36:15 -0500 From: Karen Hester Subject: Anna von Hausswolff Thanks to a reminder from Jason Gordon, I saw Anna von Hausswolff and her band (keys, drums, guitar, and projected moon) at Union Hall on Friday night. This is a tiny downstairs room with a low ceiling, mediocre sound and a one-foot-high stage. Since Anna is about 5 feet, much of the audience was taller than her despite standing on the floor. I was wedged at the front side next to the speakers (stuffing my ears with tissues), and I became very familiar with the back of her head. Her hair, which is white-blond, was partly wrapped with silver twine and tied into a pony tail, and she was dressed in a somewhat 'olde' dress, which went well with all the organ (well, synthesized organ.) I particularly enjoyed the show because I wasn't expecting an industrial concert with a head-banging band. The impact of her recorded music isn't so much of a wall of sound - numerous electronic noises, guitar, manic drummer. And her soaring voice was a bit more buried live, though still gorgeous. Plus with paper stuffed in my ears, things were somewhat murky! Adding to the abstract quality was the lack of light - the band were in the dark other than a projection of her grandfather's home movies (?), including a reappearing moon which always ended up on the drummer's face. A bit like this, though louder - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5tbTj1NTco Much fun, and hope this first US tour is followed by more.
