Today's Subjects: ----------------- Saw the lovely Phildel at Joe's Pub [Karen Hester Subject: Saw the lovely Phildel at Joe's Pub Phildel has hair past her waist and a humble stage presence, with just a few hand gestures. She's a total sweetie, even when talking about her many songs inspired by hatred! (The Wolf about her cruel fundamentalist step-father, who led to her fleeing home at 17, and 'Holes in Your Coffin' about an ex.) Other stories included how 'The Storm Song' is inspired by her mother's Irish mythology, especially banshees, and she mentioned that when writing songs she likes to play around with sine waves. Phildel's voice is as lovely as on the recordings. There are a few moments when I wish the prettiness would be smashed through with something rawer, but that's not her way. Phildel (piano, tambourine) and her partner/keyboardist and drummer played much of 'The Disappearance of the Girl' plus a couple songs from new EP 'The Glass Ghost.' The song 'The Glass Ghost' is fascinating and dark until the singing starts, when it becomes conventional, but maybe it'll grow on me. They also played 'Dark Water Down' with lyrics by Peter S. Beagle who wrote a favorite childhood book of hers, 'The Last Unicorn.' She was just as lovely and gentle after the show, signing and posing for photos.
