Both of these albums are wonderful. I'd actually forgotten how good Saltbreakers is until I pulled it out the other day. I tried listening to the new Austra in my car and was happy it clicked. Really enjoying it now, though I haven't listened to it in the house yet. I've also been listening to Vienna Teng's Aims a lot and enjoying it more. I'd loved about half of it from the first listen, but the other half is connecting better now. Agree that Daughter is worth checking out, their full length debut and their EPs. Eleanor Friedberger's new album is also worth listening to. The new Lindi Ortega seems fun. I forgot to mention Azam Ali's release with her husband, Lamentation of Swans. The album is as lovely as its title. Really glad for this discussion. I have lots of new stuff to check out now. To hear samples of the song and the inspiration for it, please watch this video on Anne and I discussing the creative process and our mutual respect for each other's work. Because of publishing deadlines, I had to deliver a finished, mastered, song in three weeks, using the novel manuscript as inspiration. The lyrics came relatively easily to me and then I reached out to John Lissauer to help with the music. John and I worked in his studio in Katonah, NY, and it felt like Anne Rice was an encouraging spirit in the room with us. I'm very pleased. I hope you will be too. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2013 11:14:01 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: ethical music consumption Something I've been thinking about a lot, and reading about. It seems more and more artists are talking and writing about it. It being streaming services and the effect of their popularity on artists' ability to make a living. Tim mentioned it recently, so I thought I'd open a discussion here. How do you consume music ethically? For the record, I do have a Spotify subscription and listen to a lot of music there. Some of it is music I later go on to buy, usually stuff I like a lot, artists I particularly want to support, or stuff I'd like to listen to in my car. I use it as a way of checking out artists and albums I'm interested in. I also use it for stuff I'm unlikely to listen to often, like when I need an 80s music fix. Much of it I never buy. Right now I'm underemployed and barely paying my bills. But as much as I love music, I don't think I'll ever earn enough to buy everything I'd want. So I try to do what I can, attend love concerts, and sometimes I pre-order stuff and support Kickstarter-type campaigns. I like having hard copies of CDs and must admit I'm more likely to buy if there are some bonus features included. But how much money does an artist get if I buy from Amazon for $9.99? For the moment I've cut out albums and concerts until I'm on better financial footing. I have kept my Spotify account however. I'll stop here before I get too rambly. Here are a couple of articles on the subject of streaming services and royalties. David Byrne yesterday in the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/11/david-byrne-internet-content-wor ld and a NY Times piece that profiles Zoe Keating: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/29/business/media/streaming-shakes-up-music-in dustrys-model-for-royalties.html?pagewanted=all. Thoughts? I've been loving each of them, especially Lorde, and could easily see a few of them amongst my top 10 for the year. The new Mazzy Star has some really beautiful tracks, and I've been loving Laura Veirs' new one too. I'm still getting to know the new Glasser and Agnes Obel. I'll give Julia Holter's new one a few more spins. It hasn't grabbed me the way "Ekstasis" did, but because of the raves from people here, I feel like I need to give it a few more chances. Maybe he's not quite ecto-material, but Jack Johnson's new album is really infectious and fun. Lots of great music this year!
