But the last few weeks have been great. It started in August with Laura Veirs' Warp and Weft, her best album to date and my favorite album of the year so far. It's solid all the way through, with folk and rock and even jazz and blues on the last track, White Cherry. Her ode to Alice Coltrane (That Alice) makes me want to explore Coltrane's music. I really can't recommend this album highly enough. Goldfrapp's Tales of Us fulfilled the promise of its first single. It's haunting and mysterious and thoroughly lovely. Mazzy Star returned with Seasons of Your Day. If you want the band to break new ground you might be disappointed, but if you just want more Mazzy Star you'll love it. I'm in the latter camp. I love both So Tonight That I Might See and Among My Swan for instance (much more than She Hangs Brightly actually). I know some people find them too similar and got bored with the group. Agnes Obel's Aventine is a lovely collection of songs with and without vocals. Sarah Jarosz's third album, Build Me Up From Bones, is just as excellent as her second. She's only 22. I am so jealous. But grateful. She's billed as bluegrass but appeals to non-bluegrass fans (like me) because of her folk and pop influences. But on the darker, more ectoish side. Okay, bad review, but a great album to check out. Really. Capercaillie collaborated with other artists for the first time to celebrate their 30th anniversary (I think, definitely a big anniversary) and made their best album in years, the wonderful At the Heart of It All. (Clannad, another band with a long history of great music that had gone mushy, also released a new album, Nadur, but I haven't heard it yet. Has anyone?) Over the Rhine's Meet Me at the Edge of the World has 2 CDs worth of wonderful that I haven't properly explored yet so I'm going to go listen to it now. Vienna Teng delivered Aims, which so far I find the most uneven of fall releases. I really love about half of it, and half I don't really connect with. She's got the CD Eco-pack on sale at her site for $5 plus s/h. It's certainly worth more than that. Sale ends at 11:59 pm EST tonight: http://viennateng.fanbridge.com/campaigns/show.php?id=1032550&src=facebook Sadly, Emiliana Torrini's Tookah doesn't really do anything for me. Maybe with time? I hope other people are enjoying a lovely autumn day and finding new music to enjoy.
