Today's Subjects: ----------------- RE: more on this year's new albums [Leonora Christina Skov ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 6 Oct 2013 19:08:24 +0200 From: Leonora Christina Skov Subject: RE: more on this year's new albums Thanks, JoAnn, for mentioning Laura Veirs. I haven't listened to her music since Year of Meteors which I actually liked a lot back in 2005. I'll get myself a copy of Warp and Weft right away. The new albums by Goldfrapp and Mazzy Star have been definite highlights for me as well. In fact, I am pretty sure the new Goldfrapp will end up on top of my list this year along with my most played album so far: Disappearance of the Girl by Phildel. The new Emiliana Torrini doesn't do anything for me, either, but I wish it would since I enjoyed her three previous albums, particularly Fisherman's Woman. However: I love the new Vienna Teng. Obviously, it's a radical departure from her previous piano heavy releases (which I adore), but I find it really refreshing, much in the same vein as Imogen Heap with strong material and great lyrics. I find myself humming these songs all day. Of course, I'm particularly fond of the track Copenhagen (I Wanna Go). Other strong 2013 releases: Daughter - If you Leave, CocoRosie - Tales of a Grasswidow, Carla Bruni - Little French Songs, Blue Hawaii - Untogether, Paper Aeroplanes - - Little Letters, Julianna Barwick - Nepenthe, Savages - Silence Yourself, Hem - - Departure & Farewell, Pink Martini - Get Happy and of course Agnes Obel - Aventine. I'm also enjoying Metric - Synthetica and Jane Birkin's daughter, Lou Doillon - Places, both released in 2012. The latter is particularly wonderful. I strongly encourage you to give her a listen. I'm trying to get into The Blessed Unrest by Sara Bareilles. It doesn't really connect with me so far. The same goes for the new Camera Obscura. All best from Copenhagen, Leonora ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Oct 2013 12:41:57 -0500 From: Tim Jones-Yelvington Subject: Re: more on this year's new albums Leonora, Warp and Weft is excellent -- Saltbreakers and July Flame are also excellent, make sure you don't miss them. But the last few weeks have been great. For us this year has been all about discovering the magnificent Julia Holter and Saltlands and Torres. I LOVE over half of the Savages album. We've also enjoyed the new Tunng, Austra, and the new Sigur Ros (after being not so thrilled with their last release) Claire Diterzi's Le salon des refusies is strange and amazing. Jim really likes most of the new Eleanor Friedberger and Low's Invisible Way Smoke Fairies have just released their early singles on CD (Ghosts), which are brilliant. It was only available as a collection on vinyl, and the limited edition has a bonus CD of early songs of theirs I've never heard and I'm enjoying that. My trad/folk tastes have been met by Eliza Carthy's "greatest hits" Wayward Daughter (I also read the biography by that name) and her group project, Laylam. The Unthanks have another of their Diversions collections out, Songs from the Shipyards, which is probably my favourite of these so far. Also discovered Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker--she's on the lines of Sandy Denny--trad folk and her own compositions. Just as glorious a voice and just as evocative with it. There are a couple of youtube videos of her doing Sandy Denny covers and she makes them her own, but they're as good as Sandy Denny's own renditions. People have said that about many artists and for me they've all fallen short until now. Also enjoying Nancy Elizabeth's Dancing, though haven't been it enough to have coherent thoughts about it. New Glasser out in just two days!!! And looking forward to the new Psapp in November--there's a song downloadable from their website at www.psapp.net - --Neile ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #899 ***************************
