I had a string of rubbing his head on 3 consecutive tours. I read an interview with Peter at the time and he mentioned seeing Bruce Springsteen do it, and I know Bruce had been doing it at least since 1975... and still does. As the chorus (basically that line sung over and over again) continued, he stood at the edge of the stage, dropped off backwards, got caught by the audience who then passed him back over their heads as he continued to sing. I saw Iggy Pop do it in the late 70's too, but with a mic on a cable being wrangled by a roadie... and it's probable he was doing it long before that...
