Today's Subjects: ----------------- recent concerts in NJ: Beth Orton and Mary Fahl [JoAnn Whetsell Subject: recent concerts in NJ: Beth Orton and Mary Fahl So we do get a few ectoish concerts in NJ now and then. Friday night I saw Beth Orton at the South Orange Performing Arts Center. It was an acoustic concert, just Beth on guitar and Rhodes (2 songs), sometimes accompanied by Sam Amidon on background vocals, guitar, Rhodes (1 song), and violin (1 song). She played quite a bit from her back catalogue, and it was interesting to hear older songs that were done with electronica on the albums in this way, especially songs like "Galaxy of Emptiness". The music was a bit downbeat though, with songs like "Sugar Boy" that I usually think of as pretty peppy coming off as rather melancholy. It wasn't until the encore, with "Blood Red River" that she sounded fierce. But it was a good night. As with the previous time I saw her, she made some mistakes and had to start some songs over, but it came off as endearing rather than unprofessional. She's got a few more tour dates left (Philadelphia, DC, Chicago, Portland) and if you're nearby I'd recommend catching the show: http://beth-orton.net/ Set list (this is most of it, and it's mostly in order)Pieces of Sky (a cappella)Call Me the BreezeDawn ChorusPoison TreeGalaxy of Emptiness (Sam on Rhodes, Beth singing)Someone's DaughterSweetest DeclineCentral ReservationWorms (Beth on Rhodes and vocals)Last Leaves of Autumn (Beth on Rhodes and vocals)Shopping TrolleySugar BoyConcrete Sky Encore:Blood Red RiverShe Cries Your NameOoh Child Dawn Landes opened. Her songs were sweet and folky. It was an enjoyable set, though it didn't impress me enough to buy any of her albums. Back in June I saw Mary Fahl in a wonderful intimate concert at a church in Sparta (the pastor there performed her marriage ceremony). Mary told stories before every song, talking about finding an October Project fan during a trip to China, how an Italian song ended up on The Other Side of Time (the label wanted a classical song on there since it's a classical music label), and soldiers' reactions to "Going Home," her song on the Gods and Generals soundtrack. She played that song as well as songs from her albums, from October Project's albums, and from her upcoming album, Love and Gravity. She said that album would be out in August, but I haven't heard anything since then. She's got some a few dates this fall in Maine, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and I highly recommend going if you can. http://maryfahl.com/happenings JoAnn ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #848 ***************************
