Brighton's just too expensive for the brief time I can get off work that time of year. I went to ReaderCon once and really liked it but it's held while Clarion West is in session so I haven't been since the 1990s. Wiscon is the one I really want to get to but it's held right before the Clarion West workshop so I've never made it. It's far and away my favorite convention. Worldcon tends to be...kind of crazy. You can end up with the same great moments, but it's harder, and much more dependent on luck and network. I usually prefer World Fantasy, but this year San Antonio seemed like a better (and less pricey) idea than Brighton, so this year it's probably Worldcon for me (if I actually my act together and get my membership and flight). The last couple of Worldcons I attended (Chicago last year and Montreal before that) actually went pretty well for me, so we'll see what San Antonio brings. Spotify's 10 most misquoted songs I recall a few years ago here when we had a decent Ecto discussion on misquoted lyrics. CNN today has a feature article on this topic online... (CNN) -- There's no bathroom on the right, and Jimi Hendrix never asked to be excused so he could kiss a dude. And, no, no matter how blinded by the light you may have been, you weren't wrapped up like ... a feminine hygiene product. But all those are among the world's most frequently misquoted song lyrics -- at least according to Spotify. The popular music-streaming service conducted an unscientific poll to find the most commonly botched lines from popular songs. (Of course, nobody had to fess up to getting the words wrong themselves. The poll, of 1,042 people, asked for the songs they most commonly hear other people singing incorrectly.) The winner? By a long shot, Manfred Mann's Earth Band confused the most folks with "Blinded By the Light," the 1976 hit written and first recorded by Bruce Springsteen. Fifty-two percent of respondents reported hearing "Wrapped up like a douche/when you're rollin' in the night" instead of the correct lyric: "Revved up like a deuce/another runner in the night." Listen: Spotify's top misquoted song lyrics https://play.spotify.com/user/spotify/playlist/7KsWaBDcag1Ap2bDcu1yBF Jimi Hendrix took the second spot (19%) with his line "Excuse me while I kiss the sky," from "Purple Haze" being confused for the less abstract, albeit more open-minded, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy." And in third place, 14% of respondents said they've heard "Rock the Casbah," by The Clash, mangled into "Rock the Cat Box." We're not happy about these garbled lyrics, either. Seventy percent of respondents said they get annoyed hearing other people sing lyrics wrong. They said the most common places they hear frustratingly mangled wording is concerts (34%), followed by karaoke bars (23%), public transportation (20%) and the office (18%). Also ... hubris alert. Five percent of the people who responded to the poll said they "never" get lyrics wrong themselves. (Might we suggest some early R.E.M. to remedy that?) Here's the rest of Spotify's top 10: - -- "Tiny Dancer," Elton John. "Hold me closer, Tony Danza." Actual lyric: "Hold me closer, tiny dancer." - -- "Bad Moon Rising," Creedence Clearwater Revival. "There's a bathroom on the right." Actual lyric: "There's a bad moon on the rise." - -- "Paradise City," Guns N' Roses. "Take me down to a very nice city." Actual lyric: "Take me down to Paradise City." - -- "Panama," Van Halen. "Animal!" Actual lyric: "Panama!" - -- "Like a G-6," Far East Movement. "Like a cheese stick." Actual lyric: "Like a G-6." - -- "Waterfalls," TLC. "Don't go, Jason Waterfalls." Actual lyric: "Don't go chasing waterfalls." - -- "I Try," Macy Gray. "I blow bubbles when you are not here." Actual lyric: "My world crumbles when you are not near." What are some of your favorite, or most cringe-worthy, lyric mistakes? For a friend of mine, I am currently compiling a mixed tape, well cd, with songs about birds. By that I mean songs that have the name of a certain type of bird in the songtitle. Examples: "Little bird" by Annie Lennox is not good (non-specific), "The nightingale" by Julee Cruise is good (i.e. specific). I am making a booklet to go with the cd and each song has to be represented by a real bird. That's the idea, anyway. To make matters a bit more difficult: my friend doesn't like 'heavy guitars' so some ecto artists will have to be dropped, while others (who use guitars but not in a 'hard' way) are still acceptable. Well, this is the briefing, I hope you have something to contribute. If all goes well I'll send out a nice tracklisting to this list. :) Kind regards, Marcel. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 May 2013 19:00:38 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: Songs about birds This doesn't have "name of a certain type of bird in the songtitle", that is unless a White Bird the name of a real species, but one of my all-time favorite songs ever which is RARELY heard anymore is White Bird by the 1960s band It's A Beautiful Day (aka David and Linda LaFlamme). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrFCwvlw0cs Mike ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #828 ***************************
