Today's Subjects: ----------------- Sandy Dillon, old and new [Adam Kimmel ] RE: 2013 releases [Leonora Christina Skov ] New stuff: Patty Griffin and Laura Marling [Adam Kimmel ] Correction: Here's the right link for the new song by Carla Bruni [Leonor] Recent changes to the Ectophiles' Guide ["The Ectophiles' Guide" Subject: Sandy Dillon, old and new I got introduced to Sandy Dillon via the ecto list when I first joined, and she gave one of the most thrilling, bizarre gigs I've ever seen a few years back. I know she had some severe health problems and, after the raw and raucous and rather difficult blues of "Living In Dreams" she seemed to disappear, apart from turning up on an album of covers, "96 Tears". Well, the other day I stumbled upon one of her earlier, previously unreleased albums, "Flowers" now available from Amazon as a download and gave it a try. It's quite, quite remarkable, a far cry from the Waitsian stomp that she went on to master. No twangy guitars or tin-can drums, just her voice and a variety of keyboards, and it's stunningly beautiful (not something you can say about most of her output) and so unexpectedly tender and sad it literally made me stop in my tracks as I listened to it. Highly recommended - I know she's a hard sell, but this is another kettle of fish entirely. I believe individual tracks are available on YouTube. She also appears to have a new album out, "Shipwrecked", available from CDBaby as a download only -- http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sandydillon. I haven't got that one, yet, but I'll be sure to download it as soon as I can. For all her vocal eccentricities and gurning delivery, the world really needs characters like Sandy, putting out highly distinctive music and cocking a snook at introspective musings. I have never heard of Saltland, have immediately downloaded I Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us through emusic. It sounds right up my street - I love Glasser. ... I am not a fan of Sarkozy and have, for the same reason, refused to listen to Carla Bruni for several years even though I loved her first two albums. Now, she has a new album out called Little French Songs. I am admittedly tempted to buy it after listening to first track J'arrive ` toi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_ZB7lgPLkM Such a nice song! Well, it's arrived and, after several intense listens I can say it's...well, patchy. To be honest, much as I love her, I find a lot of her albums variable in themselves. Where they shine, they shine brightly and beautifully, but seems to always be the occasional stumble (I feel the exception is "Impossible Dream", which I think is pretty much perfect). After a somewhat disappointing collection of gospel songs and then a long hiatus during which she toured with Robert Plant's Band of Joy, she's finally back with an album of (mostly) original material, and it's always a joy to have her back on the scene. But....well, I do feel it starts out strongly, with the raw, rocking "Florida" and the dreamy "Ohio", but for me the cover of Lefty Frizell's "Mom and Dad's Waltz" is a major problem. It's just such a cloying, sentimental song it sets my teeth on edge and I'd go so far as to say it's the worst thing she's ever set down. After that, things markedly improve and the songs are really good, but rarely hit the heights of her previous albums. Although I've listened to this one several times, there are songs in the latter half that just haven't stuck in my mind, yet. I'll keep listening: Again, when it's good it's breathtaking, so it's worth the effort. As for Laura Marling's "Once I Was an Eagle": well, another album, another pretentious title and another...well, another Laura Marling album. I'm given to understand, from the reviews, that this is her best album, and I'm happy to accept this but, after following her from the start and buying and listening intensely to all her albums, I think this is where we part company. I'm just not getting it, and find her musings, while articulate, soporific and somewhat dreary. There are none of the lyrical disasters that cropped up in her previous release, but the last time I gave this one a spin I got so weary of it halfway through that I switched over to some Led Zeppelin to get the blood flowing again. Intelligent, yes; heartfelt, more than likely, but to me it sounds just like her last two albums, sometimes good, sometimes college-coffee-house generic, with the one energetic track ("Master Hunter" on this one, "All My Rage" on the last one, "Devil's Spoke" on the one before that) to liven things up. I can't believe I feel this way, and am disappointed -- I saw her on tour for the first album, and was impressed - but I'm just not feeling the love. Individual mileage may vary, of course.
