I'd say Regardless definitely has a more commercial feel to it and, yes, this initially had me kind of worried. I mean, "Looking for Love" has an almost disco-ey vibe. I saw it described by one listener as "Kirsty MacColl meets Giorgo Moroder", which I thought was pretty neat. When this was revealed as the first single and the CD cover, with its glossy picture of Thea looking like she's going for the Adele market (I understood she'd fought with her label NOT to put her picture on "Murphy's Heart")...well, following on from a couple of sub-par projects (The Dylan and Denny albums) the signs weren't encouraging. A couple of us expressed our misgivings on the Thea fan board, and then Thea herself weighed in, saying that, yes, the single was more radio-friendly - although she took offence at one fan's description of it as "happy clappy" - but she needed to eat and pay bills. She then told us what had inspired the song (the "love" that she sings about is that of her two sons) and asked us to wait for the whole album, which was close to her heart. So, yes, I do think it's the most consciously radio-friendly album she's done, but having listened to it a few times, now, it actually feels as if it's also the most confessional, most personal album she's done so far -- quite something for an artist who's pretty raw and open as a matter of course. This is among the many fascinating things about this one, is that she's pulled a real blinder. I mean, you have the deeply personal and melancholy "I Will Not Disappoint" right next to the uplifting pop of "Looking for Love" and the glorious rocking of "Start As We Mean to Go On", all the while with the lush coating of strings. It's downright odd and yet it all absolutely works. The last time she was this "produced" was "Harpo's Ghost", and that didn't work at all for her music, but this time she's found a wonderfully unsettling fit. In the meantime, the Metro ran an interview with her (shockingly, about the only press coverage she's had) in which she talks about her post-natal depression how that impacted on her music and vice versa: http://metro.co.uk/2013/05/14/singersongwriter-thea-gilmore-making-music-helped-me-get-over-postnatal-depression-3757336/ So, it's a paradox for me, which I guess makes it all the more fascinating. It's not what I expected, and she's somehow managed to move forward in a subtle, seductive way that I think is a stroke of genius. Not sure where I'd place it in comparison to "Murphy's Heart", which I've always felt is her best(surprised that people haven't taken to that) but I suspect it will stay with me for a long, long time. Sorry about the essay and the lack of any definite conclusion!
