Today's Subjects: ----------------- Rachel Zeffira, Valravn [JoAnn Whetsell ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2013 08:22:09 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: Rachel Zeffira, Valravn I discovered 2 artists recently who I think a lot of ectophiles would enjoy. RACHEL ZEFFIRA is a classically-trained Canadian who lives in England and makes dreamy pop. She recently released her debut album The Deserters and was profiled on NPR (http://www.npr.org/2013/04/16/177471795/rachel-zeffira-an-opera-deserter-emb races-dreamy-pop) which is how I found her. The music sometimes reminds me of Marissa Nadler, but with more variety. There's a lot of beautiful instrumentation, and she plays most (all?) of the instruments herself. VALRAVN is a Scandinavian band that makes somewhat dark trad-based alternative rock. The singer's vocals are often Bjork-like. I think fans of Sorten Muld and/or Garmarna would enjoy. The have 3 albums (the most recent is remixes) and a lot of full songs on their website: http://www.valravn.net/Valravn.net/VALRAVN.html FYI: According to Wikipedia, "In Danish folklore, a valravn (Danish "raven of the slain") is a supernatural raven. The ravens appear in traditional Danish folksongs, where they are described as originating from ravens who consume the bodies of the dead on the battlefield, as capable of turning into the form of a knight after consuming the heart of a child, and, alternately, as half-wolf and half-raven creatures."
