Looking at the iTunes ratings I've since consistently given the songs on the two albums, I'm not even sure my initial disappointment is warranted. True, there is nothing quite like the three really great songs of the first album (yes, L.E.S. Artistes is among these) on Master Of My Make-Believe but the latter contains a lot fewer sub-par songs. And The Riots Gone (off the second album) is nothing short of amazing. Overall, though, I, too, wouldn't really consider Santigold Ecto material, genre-wise. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2013 17:12:54 +0000 (UTC) From: Jeff Hanson Subject: Re: February listening My recent listening comprises mostly of stuff obtained at Folk Alliance or shortly thereafter. Rachel Sermanni - Under Mountains - not quite as good as seeing her live (doesn't quite capture her charm), but pretty songs--very ecto Katie Noonan - Songbook - definitely one of the most ectophilic performers--pianos with strings, lush arrangements - kind of reminds me of Emily Bezar at times Baskery - Fall Among Thieves - Swedish sister-trio - lots of fun--driving drum/banjo/bass sound Kristin Sweetland - Own Sweet Time -this is a fairly old album, but Kristin is a very intriguing performer who's eccintricity and charm belies and sometimes detracts from B her talent--lots of moody instrumental pieces, but some really interesting traditional folk-inspired songs.B She seems to have great potential, but somehow doesn't quite live up to it live.B Her recorded albums are beautiful though. The Ragbirds - a fun eclectic mix of world music with a female lead singer based in Michigan - really like their tango song "Brave New Beat" The Milk Carton Kids - a great early Simon/Garfunkel like duo from L.A.--great serious songs and really intriguing live performance--very hilarious in a completely understated way Parker Millsap - Pallisade - not exactly ecto--but real promising album from a young kid that looks something like Justin Bieber but sings and plays with a growl and an intensity that is really surprising.B He doesn't sound anything like he looks.B Much more bluesy than you'd expect. Reed Turner - didn't see him at Folk Alliance but somehow ended up with his CD_-really nice singer-songwriter stuff, a bit moody and dark Seth Glier -finally got to check out Seth -- really enjoyed him--a bit mainstream, but good songs, great voice, and a lot of fun (and seemed like a real nice guy).B He's on Rachel Sage's label. Dar Williams - a highlight of Folk Alliance--made me go back and check out some of her recent albums (Many Great Companions, Promised Land, B and In the Time of Gods) that I'd never bothered to get The Coal Porters - An English/American B bluegrass band based in London, with one of hte members of The Long Ryders - particularly the bluegrass cover of Bowie's "Heroes" Amanda Mair - self-titled album--actually wasn't at Folk Alliance but the sound man was playing it before Seth Glier's set and I really enjoyed it Veda Hille's - Peter Panties/The Craiglist Cantata/Young St. Marie B - had the pleasure of seeing Veda perform Craiglist Cantata in Toronto--happy coincidence--not part of FOlk Alliance--of these Young St. Marie is definitely the most Veda-ish--the others have fun moments but are a bit erratic (both Craiglist Cantata and Peter Panties are from stage productions) Also really looking forward to Lynn Miles new album- she played some great songs from it at the show, but its not out quite yet, but should be soon. Paloma Faith's albums--which I've been enjoying.B Not quite as good as Amy Winehouse or Adele but in that vein--very solid. Ane Brun - It All Starts With One - A really pretty CD of impressive songs ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #710 ***************************
