Euzen were my last years favourites and I saw them again in October. They just finished their new video, almost in time for the end of the mayan calendar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrxJAPyOKf4 Also I got some of the older stuff by The Gathering. Their 1999 album 'How To Measure A Planet' is my favourite from their Anneke era. This more or less marks their departure from heavy metal, of course still with electric guitars, but more atmospheric and melodic, some more experimental electronic soundsb& and some of Annekes best vocals. My most recent discovery: Pentatones AFAIK they're from a more electro or even dance background, but they also integrate jazz, ambient and trip hop elements in their music. Big favourite so far, 'The Devil's Hand', title track of their recent album, here in a dramatic version with orchestra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJeO41rPPes I saw them in a small club, where they didn't bring the orchestra, but they did use the double bass for a couple of tracks. http://www.ipernity.com/doc/rolf/14155774/in/album/298815 Another interesting new artist: Joon Wolfsberg Discovered her in summer by accident, when she was playing by the roadside at a local city festival: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/rolf/12883596/in/album/295340 That day she played mostly cover songs, but I learned she has already two albums of own material, recorded in Nashville. Mostly folk rock, sometimes with a slight touch of country. Not knowing any better comparisons, I#d describe her vocals as somewhere between Melissa Etheridge and Amy MacDonald. Saw her again in December, with a full band, and it was great fun, despite being their first gig together. 'Please', from her first album 'Made in USA' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6uwGGBMfeY 'I Would Die', from the second, 'Wonderland' She's currently recording on her third album, and this is how they work in the studio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etJo1_b1Xbs :-) Rolf ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2013 22:00:03 -0500 From: Karen Hester Subject: Arunima - Hello Seahorse! More dance, electronic, pop, whatever from Mexico's Hello Seahorse! Their exclamation mark, not mine :) Nothing quite so dreamy as 'Me Has Olvidado' this time, but good nonetheless. I like disco-y "No es que no te quiera" and single "Para me" with its bird whoops and everything, pretty much. It drifts into the background since I don't know Spanish, but still good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfSSR8RLwcs&list=UUvMWv4uSrh7_3FIb5lF6eKw&index=2 K ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #676 ***************************
