Yes, I looked at songmeanings but nothing really shed any light. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! Bob L. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2013 23:12:18 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: Florence and the Machine - Spectrum - what are those allusions? Yeah, I have to say that in all that there was hardly anything I found persuasive in the least, and some of the Illuminati/Antichrist/Planetary Awakening stuff was really over-the-top wacky. The only interesting thing I found was that one of the comments led me, somewhat obliquely, to this description of the hamsa: "The hamsa, or eye in the palm of a hand, is an Arabic and Jewish apotropaic amulet for magical protection from the evil eye. The word hamsa, or hamesh, refers to the five digits on the hand. Also called the hand of Fatima, in reference to the daughter of Mohammed, or the hand of Miriam, the hamsa appears in a two-thumbed, bilaterally symmetrical form, as well as in a more natural form in which there is one thumb. Archaeological evidence suggests that the hamsa predates both Judaism and Islam. Examples can also be found in Roman art and South American hoodoo iconography. It has no masonic significance." And then when I searched for "kiss" and "hamsa" I ran across this "fish kiss - hamsa" pendant: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hagitsh/2650708008/ "The hamsa hand (Arabic) or hamesh hand (Hebrew) is an old and still popular apotropaic amulet for magical protection from the envious or evil eye. The words hamsa and hamesh mean 'five' and refer to the digits on the hand. Among Jews, fish are considered to be a symbol of good luck. The color blue, or more specifically light blue, is also considered protective against the evil eye and we could see many Hamsas in that color or with embedded gemstones in different shades of blue." There is also a Michael Negrin Hamsa pendant with two swimmers kissing, which would also lend some meaning to "ocean in our arms." http://www.amazon.com/Michal-Negrin-Splendid-Swimmers-Swarovski/dp/B007HADR3I This all seems a little too esoteric, but maybe there's something relevant here someplace. The hamsa led me to Kabbalah, and there were a few things that seemed like they also might have some relevance: http://www.alchemylab.com/jewish_alchemy.htm "Light is the foundation upon which rests the superstructure of the Kabbalistic theosophy. Light is the source and center of the entire harmonious system. Light was the first-born of God -- His first manifestation of Himself in the universe.... "The fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth Sephira are called, respectively, Hesed (Strength), Gevurah (Beauty), Netsah (Firmness), and Hod (Splendor). These Sephira represent four of the component colors of Light: Red, Yellow, Green and Blue. The Kabbalists fully understood the colors, their influence in Light and in Nature, their distinctive properties, and their action together and separately. They considered Red and Yellow the masculine or active colors and Green and Blue the feminine or passive colors. Red and yellow expressed the active, polarizing quality of Fire and Green and Blue, the passive, decomposing quality of Water." "When, however, we pass to the material world we find the blackness of darkness, because God's Law of Harmony has been broken by man, and disharmony (or alchemical Chaos) has brought disease, decay, and death upon every species of life -- even upon the earth the seal of doom is set. Change and dissolution are seen on all hands, but ultimately it shall pass away." There is also a section on "The Unspeakable Name": "The Greek alchemist Pythagoras correctly regarded the Ineffable Name of God -- the Tetragrammaton or Four Letter Name -- as the key to the mysteries of the universe and of its creation and preservation. This is 'the Name' that so many have sought, that they might unlock the mystical secrets of Magic, discover the treasures of Symbolism, and fathom the depths of All Learning and Wisdom. Swedenborg declared 'the Name' to have been lost, but he erred. According to the Kabbalists, it was only its pronunciation, and unfortunately its vibratory power, that was lost or obscured." On the other hand, the Kabbalistic symbolism is full of so many different things that you could probably find anything in it. But maybe it's at least in the right universe; Florence and the Machine's videos for "Shake It Out" and "No Light No Light" are full of occult symbolism. (More specifically, but more tenuously, Madonna is very public about studying Kabbalah, and Florence is apparently an admirer.) But even so this still doesn't explain all the rest, like "metal on our tongues" and the bit about dragging bodies from their graves.
