Today's Subjects: ----------------- Best of 2012 lists [Adam Kimmel ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2013 02:58:48 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Best of 2012 lists Dear All, Great -- as always -- to see everyone's lists for the year, and very interesting reading it is, too. I notice there are several artists common to many lists (Fiona Apple, Eliza Rickman) and it's great to see Carina Round make a couple of lists. This was the year I seem to have ground to a halt when it comes to listening to contemporary music, so some of you may be relieved to hear there's no list from me. I'm not sure why this is, but something in my brain switched over and, instead, I've been trying to educate myself with classical music. It's been a complex, frustrating but wondrous journey, but it means I've bought less new music in 2012 than I have for years -- not even a dozen titles, I think - and very little has made any impression on me. Anais Mitchell, Kathleen Edwards, Stars and Pinback all floated by without leaving much of a mark; Bob Mould's critically acclaimed "Silver Age" actually bored me rigid (remember when, in the latter days of Husker Du, he started to write songs with real dynamics and textures? Yeah, well, forget that, now). I think the only album that really stood out for me is the Carina Round, with Shearwater's Animal Joy lurking in the background, but that was about it. Here's hoping better vibes for 2013: Jonatha Brooke's back in the studio, Thea Gilmore's finally recording original material, Jo Hamilton is recording again and I believe even Juliet Turner is recording again. I'd love to see new albums by all of these, plus Veda Hille (although she seems to be involved in theatre, right now) and even Sandy Dillon. Maybe then I'd drag myself back into the 21st Century!
