Not too much on an ecto front, but a few of them are. Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino - An Italian group that I saw twice this year. The first show, at Webster Hall in NYC during GlobalFest, was the first time I'd seen them and they blew me away. MarchFourth Marching Band - Saw twice this year too, but the second time was particularly fun. 20-piece cabaret-infused "marching band" that is always high energy and fun to see. Diego's Umbrella - Opened for MarchFourth early in the year and came back to do a small club show of their own. One of my favorite new discoveries. For rock and roll with some gypsy elements and very catchy songs Suen Kuti & Egypt 80 "Weird Al" - I'm not even a huge fan, but I'd never seen him before and his show is a non-stop riot, full of costume changes and set pieces. Tons of fun. Buffy Sainte-Marie - Unbelievable what a powerhouse performer she is and she is in her 70's! Earth Sounds Ensemble - a collaboration between Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai, didgeridoo player Stephen Kent and two stunning Mongolian musicians. Total magic. Here is a short video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKxpTBNWxkI Yasemin Mori - I stumbled across her CD release party when I was in Istanbul and had a blast. I didn't even know her music going in, but she fronted a killer large band and was very dynamic and engaging. This one is totally ecto. She sold out of CDs before I got one and I couldn't find good streaming options, but I put together a YouTube playlist where you can here her the new CD. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWL3XCn7Iyhnx9dqJM1PVEyIDfYrWhmF_ Balkan Beat Box - Actually saw a very cool Greek Rembetika concert that evening - My Sweet Canary - which included the wonderful Savina Yannatou, Mor Karbasi and a few other Greek artists I didn't know. It was wonderful, but we took a cab to this airplane hangar like club in an industrial part of Thessaloniki and were treated to an explosive show by Balkan Beat Box that is what I really remember from the night. DakhaBrakha - this Ukrainian ensemble was a huge hit at WOMEX. Most of my friends were blown away. Very ecto. With beautiful inlaid cellos and cool costumes and giant traditional Russian hats. But stunning music, mixing traditional and electronic and oddness. What a discovery. Poetic, haunting, and deeply personal lyrics combined with Mike Hadreas' quivering and vulnerable voice makes for an intense listening journey. This album is truly something special. #2: Lana Del Rey - "Born to Die" and "Paradise" Such an incredible voice! I love the various genres she plays with, too. Some hip-hop, some ballads, some rock anthems, some pop gems - she's unafraid to experiment. I haven't disliked a single song she's done, and she was incredibly prolific this year. I will say, lyrically, she leaves much to be desired. There's a hint of irony throughout, but if there was more substance to what she's singing, she could take her work to an even greater level. #3: Lavender Diamond - "Incorruptible Heart" Another deeply enjoyable album released this year. Becky Stark's soft-yet-soaring vocals keep me coming back. #4: Purity Ring - "Shrines" Came back to this one so many times for its incredibly unique sound. #5: JJ - "High Summer" Not a full-length album, but tracks "Times" and "High Summer" are epic and beautiful. #6: Norah Jones - "Little Broken Hearts" #7: Chairlift - "Something" #8: Beach House - "Bloom" #9: Aimee Mann - "Charmer" #10: Sigur Ros - "Valtari" Honorable Mentions: Sea of Bees: "Orangefarben" Stars: "The North" Silver Swans: "Forever" Molly Nilsson: "History" Marissa Nadler: "The Sister" Beth Jeans Houghton: "Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose" Lori Carson: "Another Year" Marina and the Diamonds: "Diamond Heart" No Doubt: "Push and Shove" Paul ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2012 00:53:23 -0500 From: Karen Hester Subject: Dylan's 'Copyright Extension Collection' Yes, it's actually called that. Volume One. There were 100 official Sony CD-Rs of the set released in Europe this week, 100 euros for some crappy photocopied packaging and also 100 euros for the downloads. The purpose of this weird release was to quickly get the recordings out before their European copyright expired, so Sony own them for 50 more years. There were companies with their own releases due next year, but not now. In addition to exciting, amusing, confusing and enraging various portions of Dylan's fandom, it's an interesting harbinger of what might happen to other artists. I expect record labels will quickly get more organized and put out the nice box set versions rather than quick shit-it's-new-years-already releases, since they'll lose lots of sales to illegal downloads. Sony clearly care much more about maintaining copyright than illegal downloads, or they'd have priced the digital copies lower. Does EMI own various performances of Kate's early demos? Even if she'd rather they languish in obscurity, perhaps the corporation would feel otherwise if about to lose them.
