Today's Subjects: ----------------- Amanda Palmer and Grand Theft [Adam Kimmel ] a.r kane feature in the guardian [=?iso-8859-1?Q?anna_maria_stj=E4rnell?=] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2012 00:01:33 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Amanda Palmer and Grand Theft I just read one of the articles on Amanda Palmer's scheme for her backing musicians. The only thing that surprises me is the risk she's taking on the kind of musician who'd be willing to do this for free, presumably for the experience and the mention on their resumes. I tried to be an actor for about 25 years over here (most aspirants would give up after five, but me...just a glutton for punishment, I guess). During that time, I hardly ever worked for money. If anything, I SPENT money on travel, food, etc, while rehearsing in distant church halls and performing in theatres above or in the back of pubs across London. I did a couple paid stints, but the rest was all for free, all for experience and in the hope that I could get someone along to see me. I wasn't alone -- that's how it works over here, hundreds of thousands of actors struggling to get a decent, albeit unpaid, role on the London fringe as a showcase they can get agents or casting directors in. The actor's union, Equity, has no qualms about that at all. And yet, if memory serves me correctly, in America, things were different (I speak from a fading memory of 30 years ago). There was one trade paper that would name and shame any actors they found working in showcase shows for free, and one actress I knew would work under an assumed name whenever she was just trying to keep her hand in. So, I'd be surprised if Amanda Palmer has trouble getting people to tour with her. A chance to strut your stuff with a name singer/songwriter with an established fan base and built-in critical acclaim? If I was half the age I am, I'd learn to play an instrument, fast. Which does mean she might get an awful lot of rubbish musicians jostling for a place, like the X factor with horns. That's just my tuppence worth, and that's about all I've got, these days..
