Cat Power's new album, Sun, is as good as Neile says. It will be on my best-of-the-year list. I love how the songs are so different, so individual, but it all works as an album. David Byrne & St. Vincent, Love This Giant. In the wrong mood, this is really weird, but in the right mood it's really interesting. Mary Jane Lamond hasn't been much discussed on ecto, but I will keep plugging her because I really do think fans of traditional Celtic music (as well as those who like theirs modernized with a bit of pop) will really like her. She has a new album, Seinn, a collaboration with Wendy MacIsaac, which is really beautiful. Simple, unfussy, some instrumentals. Tina Dico, Where Do You Go to Disappear? A surprise as I didn't know she had a new album out. I think I only got to listen to about half of it, but it sounded really strong. There's also a live album from last year with the Danish National Orchestra. Aimee Mann, Charmer. I haven't picked this up yet but got to listen to this when it was streaming online. It sounds really solid though not breaking any new ground. NPR has a short piece on the album at http://www.npr.org/2012/09/17/161157137/aimee-mann-charmer-is-just-another-wo rd-for-narcissist What do people think of Amanda Palmer's new one (by Amanda Palmer & the Grand Theft Orchestra), Theatre Is Evil? I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet. There's a Tiny Desk Concert at: http://www.npr.org/event/music/161152883/amanda-palmer-and-the-grand-theft-or chestra-tiny-desk-concert?autoplay=true And has anyone heard the new Azure Ray, As Above So Below? Rickie Lee Jones has a new covers album, The Devil You Know, that I didn't really like on first listen. There's a set of different covers on NPR's Song Travels at: http://www.npr.org/2012/05/31/154099315/rickie-lee-jones-on-song-travels Next week new Holly Cole and Lucy Kaplansky! So much to listen to, so little time. Maybe we could convince her? i dunno that money is the issue. my suspicion is that Happy creates music as the muse enables her to. i think she has the means to record and to lay down tracks. and i think she is remains in contact with musicians that she has worked with in the past (like the Gongzilla folks). but all this is speculation, i can't and don't speak for her. i can forward your note, Doug. dunno what she'll do with it. she might know about Kickstarter. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2012 21:58:22 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Latest pet peeve: Media players without volume controls Lately it seems more and more embedded media in web pages have players in which it's impossible to control the volume. What this means in practice is that I'm at home at 11pm, I click on the player, and am immediately blasted out of my chair by the volume (and no doubt my neighbors are annoyed as well). There is no "standard" volume for media on the Internet, which means, e.g., that sometimes when I'm watching videos I can't hear anything unless I turn both the video player and my computer up to maximum volume. Then the next video that comes along of course raises the roof. I like to be able to set the volume control low on the media player before I start playing, and then adjust it after the clip starts playing. Does this bother anyone else? ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #554 ***************************
