I think it's one of her best. I was glad to hear someone say that they liked the newest Jesca Hoop release. I didn't like it on first listen, but I'll give it another spin. I had high expectations for the CD, and it fell short. My favorite CD of the year so far is from Loop 2.4.3, an experimental percussion group based in Brooklyn. Their latest, America Dreamland, moves from their usual instrumental work into vocals that might be appealing to the Ecto crowd. Shara Worden is one of the guest vocalists. Channel 4 has it here, rather than the BBC, so there have been complaints about the ad breaks, although I have a feeling that those ad breaks were shorter in duration than NBC's. At any rate, it wasn't a big night for big name stars, particularly in terms of music. Stephen Hawking opened the night and narrated bits and pieces throughout, and Ian McKellan appeared off and on and Prospero to Nicola Miles-Wildin's Miranda. (Nicola Miles-Wildin just happens to be disabled herself.) Soprano Denise Leigh, who happens to be blind and was the winner of Channel 4's talent show Operatunity sang, as did Beverley Knight. Local teenage singer and pianist (well, for me -- she lives in my town and even attends the local state school) Birdy played piano and sang an Antony and the Johnsons' cover, "Bird Gerhl", to accompany an amazing performance by legless (born without legs) dancer David Toole. This video doesn't really show much of him, alas, but it does show Birdy and what else was going on in the stadium. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlvJWgjU6Wk Ellen "Literature stops in 1100. What are your five favorite 2012 albums? I'm glad we checked out Susanne Sundfxr - we are most entranced by the first couple of tracks on The Brothel but I also like a bunch of The Silicone Veil. Need to listen to her more - we're just beginning to get familiar with it. There's definitely some great stuff here though. The first track of The Brothel is especially magical! - --jessica On Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 1:13 PM, Neile Graham wrote: > Wow--I've only bought thirteen albums this year, three of which haven't > arrived yet, eight of which were old (all but one from 2011) releases I > was catching up on, one I sold back (The Unthanks' Robert Wyatt and Andrew > Bird album which was so so boring unto me). > > Laura Gibson's La Grande is pretty grand. Unbelievable voice, I wish I were poetic enough to describe how I feel about it. His voice has only gotten better over time. Just magical.
