Well, I'd like to second the following (although I have a feeling I may have nominated them the first time around?) > Jonatha Brookes, Ten Cent Wings > Neko Case, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood > Toni Childs, Union > Sandy Dillon, Pull the Strings > Dubstar, Disgraceful > Eels, Electro-Shock Blues > Feist, Let it Die > Melissa Ferrick, Everything I Need > Eliza Gilkyson, Hard Times in Babylon > Sarah Harmer, You Were Here > Veda Hille, Here is a picture (although I'd prefer Return of the Kildeer, which I think is far better) > Indigo Girls, Indigo Girls (although this is the seminal IG album, I'd prefer Swamp Ophelia, which I think is their high-point, IMHO) > Natalie Merchant, Ophelia > Tom McRae, Tom McRae > The Nields, If You Lived Here You'd Be Home By Now > Jill Sobule, Jill Sobule > Suddenly Tammy, We'll Get There When We Do > Vienna Teng, Warm Strangers > Throwing Muses, Red Heaven > Juliet Turner, Season of the Hurricane > Dar Williams, End of the Summer Somebody mentioned Fever Ray, and I'd definitely second that. No Carina Round, I notice and she's someone I'd definitely consider worthy of inclusion, if not for her debut, The First Blood MysterY", then for this year's "Tigermending", which -- give my limited exposure to new music this year -- is my fave release for this year. I also notice -- as an old prog-head -- that Yes and Genesis have been given plugs, but I'd prefer to nominate Genesis' Selling England By the Pound. It doesn't have the force or vibrancy of their earlier albums, but it's uniquely British and, beneath its somewhat more refined exterior sound beats a waspish, satirical heart. I'd also like to put a plug in for Gentle Giant, that other most English and eclectic of bands. While queuing up for my first live experience with them, back in Chicago in '77, someone behind me said to their companion, "Yeah, they're a real loner's band", which I think gives them a pass to the hall of ectodom. I nominate (belatedly) their Free Hand album. But we could play this game all night. Fun, isn't it? And good to see the list perk up a bit. I've been lurking the list for a few months, and I'v decided that now is the time to pop out. Reason: this list basically includes 90% of my favourite albums. They're all there, from Joan Osborne's Relish to Rasputina's debut, and of course Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, Natalie Merchant and Nick Drake. Even more notable is the fact that it includes those 'odd' albums I really like and everybody else tends to loathe - e.g. Tinderbox, which everybody tends to ignore in favour of, say, Juju or the more 'punkish' output of the Banshees. Does this make me an ectophile or something? Greetings from Eye-taly! - -- Tobia Tesan Q: Do you know what the death rate around here is? Fortunately, I had the time to pull out my phone and give Shazam a listen; turned out it was "Go Ahead" by Rilo Kiley. I'm also hearing more and more often the song "Lights," by Ellie Goulding. For me, it calls to mind Anneli Drecker and Bel Canto. Anyone got recent favorites they've discovered this way? ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #520 ***************************
