I'd been hearing for a long time about how brilliant it was, and finally got around to listening to the latest ep via the web archives, and I thought the host was so unbelievably obnoxious, smug and self-congratulatory that I could hardly stand it. I did make it through about 90 min. of the 3-hour show, figuring I should give it a real shot, but ultimately could take no more. Could somebody please explain its appeal? Or maybe it's just one of those "different strokes for different folks" things... Also, for any fans of prog, my husband is in Pennsylvania for this festival: http://www.nearfest.com/schedule.asp Van Der Graaf Generator, Renaissance, U.K., and many more. I was very happy to let him go by himself, as I suspect many wives/girlfriends did, since he reported that the male/female ratio is about 90:10. It's that rare music event where there's NO line for the ladies' room and a massive line for the men's room! https://twitter.com/CicciRenstrom/status/216735424180273153/photo/1 (the tweet is in Swedish, but you'll get the idea) - --Sue ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2012 16:22:12 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Basia Bulat @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, 6/24/12 I went to Music Hall of Williamsburg last night to hear Basia Bulat; caught Midtown Dickens before her set and also some of the headline band, Bowerbirds. Midtown Dickens and Bowerbirds both come from North Carolina; Midtown Dickens is fronted by two women vocalists and has an Appalachian sound, some plaintiveness and bluegrass sounds. Occasionally I thought of Amber Rubarth with twang. I wasn't enthusiastic, but they were pleasant. Bowerbirds was also ok, though their music was occasionally more interesting--with the keyboards sometimes it veered off in a prog direction, without ever quite getting there. Mostly male vocal, but often with a woman accompanying. The crowd loved Basia Bulat, and so did I. She comes across as sweetly as Amber Rubarth, has a fantastic voice, and is agile on multiple instruments including autoharp, hammer dulcimer, keyboards, guitar, and charango. (One of the audience shouted out something about her ukelele, and she informed us that it was a charango--a cousin of the ukelele with more strings.) I love the way she goes to town with the autoharp on "Gold Rush," and many of the songs in the set were similarly full of pep ("Go On"--her Energizer bunny song--and "Snakes and Ladders," which she played on the keyboards). She mentioned that she normally plays with a band, but the songs come across very well when she does them solo. She played several new songs, starting the set with "City without Rivers," which held everyone spellbound. After the show I got to meet her and she said she's three-quarters of the way through a new album. For those not familiar, I recommend the following videos: "Gold Rush" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hANYD0_qQl4 "The Shore" http://vimeo.com/8628572 "Heart of my Own" (solo ukelele version, filmed on the street in Paris) http://vimeo.com/10243591 Her "Little Waltz" was used by Volkswagen in an ad, and "Before I Knew" by Subaru -- those are also on YouTube. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #467 ***************************
