Today's Subjects: ----------------- Sandy Denny tribute at the Barbican, London [Adam Kimmel ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 28 May 2012 02:26:13 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Sandy Denny tribute at the Barbican, London A surprisingly enjoyable evening, given the odds. Those odds being my ignorance of not only Sandy's ouevre but also the identity of almost everyone performing on the evening, plus the rather patchy production. There were "dead air" moments when nobody was onstage and the whole thing ground to a halt, and both Maddy Prior and PP Arnold stopped respective pieces a couple of minutes in, PP Arnold taking two run-ups at hers. Some patchy performing, as well: Green Gartside, from Scritti Politti, just didn't have the voice for the material and sounded painfully strained; I didn't care for Blair Dunlop -- son of Ashley Hutchings, one of the co-founders of Fairport convention -- his voice and stage presence left me cold, but others enjoyed him. Still, ultimately, it all worked out wonderfully: Highlights include Maddy Prior in great voice (despite the false start on "Solo"), Thea Gilmore brilliantly performing tracks from her Sandy Denny project, Lavinia Blackwell from Trembling Bells, who sounded uncannily like Sandy Denny, performing a great "A Sailor's Life" with Dave Swarbrick accompanying on violin, and PP Arnold taking things to another level entirely with three songs including a big, soulful, truly magical version of "Take Me Away". There was also a guy called Ben Nicholls who did a great, stomping version of a song called "Matty Groves", a traditional song I didn't know at all (and which he introduced with: "This song needs no introduction", so I had to find out the name elsewhere). I was also very pleasantly surprised by Joan as Policewoman, whose work I'm also totally unfamiliar with, who did a couple of songs with a refreshingly bluesy, smokey voice that I really enjoyed. Everyone came back on stage for the finale of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", and it was beautiful. Overall, despite my ignorance and varying pace and quality, I thought this was a really magical evening. Ibm excited to be able to include this song on the new album b it was recorded with Chris Cunningham, Michelle Kinney, Lindsey Horner and Joe Trump and we performed it regularly at Fez Under Time CafC) when we had a long run of performances there before it closed in 2005. That was such a lovely place to play.. This week Ibm preparing to perform at the World Science Festival here in New York in an event entitled bMadness Redefinedb with Kay Jamison, Elyn Saks and James Fallon: http://worldsciencefestival.com/events/madness_redefined The rehearsals have been great: I love to be singing so much and feel the flow of new ideas. The inspiring musicians Ibm working with are Erik Della Penna, Chris Foley, Justin Carroll, Lindsey Horner and Allison Miller. Attached is a photo from my recent trip to Rome.
