I am not into classical music as much as some of you out there, yet I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Chopin's 'Nocturnes' yet. My fondness for these pieces come from my childhood. Between 6 and 20, I was taught the piano by my grandmother, who was a classical pianist back in the early 20th century. She played for our queen and everything. In the late Eighties, we recorded a tape (yeah, those were the days) of her playing the piano for 60 minutes. That's where these come from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBjiExN939w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBIOrIEE3T8 To me these are more beautiful than some of the 'official' recordings out there, and since we're in the business of recommending music to one another on this list, I'd love to hear your comments. We publish short stories that involve "bugs" in some non-trivial way. We use the term bug in the widest sense - including insects, spiders, prawns, centipedes, bug-like aliens, etc. I'm trying to put a list together of songs about bugs - songs like Heart's "Dog & Butterfly," Bourbon Princess's "The Spider Sings," B-52s "Rock Lobster," Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee," etc. The folks on this list are some of the most widely and deeply educated music listeners I've come across, so I thought I'd ask here: do any of you have any suggestions for music to add to my buggy list? I'm also very found of John Adams, who somehow straddles the line between minimalism and romanticism. If you're into Box Sets, the Kronos Quartet boxed set is a decent introduction to 20th century minimalism (I especially like their versions of Arvo Pdrt's works). > Namely Steve Reich, Terry Riley and David > Borden (composer for Mother Mallard). Borden is a local favorite. He's also been quite explicit about his affinity for Bach, especially via his various works on counterpoint. (I'm also a JS Bach fan, with at least one copy of every known work--there's a pretty good box set for that too.) > Humor is also a great form of stress relief and (to my limited > knowledge) relatively uncommon in the world of classical music. Haydn was famous for musical jokes. Beethoven, Mozart and Bach all have their share as well, and there are of course many ribald songs in the classical repertoire. However, humor is contextual, a matter of expectations, so it can take a fair amount of background knowledge to recognize the humor. I think this is generally true of humor in art, understanding the context is a prerequisite for getting the joke. - -dan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2012 19:21:48 -0400 From: Gregory Bossert Subject: Fwd: question for the ecto collective mind On Apr 5, 2012, at 6:42 PM, Bernie Mojzes wrote: > A few of you know - since 2011 I've been putting out a humble online fiction magazine called The Journal of Unlikely Entomology (grumpsjournal.com). These days I seem to do most of my serious music listening on the commute, and I find classical music the perfect way to forget about my surroundings and ease myself into the day. It's a strange, difficult, but quite wondrous odyssey, and I hope I never get jaded. I mean, I've started out with a box set of Beethoven String Quartets by the Albern Berg quartett, and I swear they contain some of the most astonishingly beautiful music I've ever heard. I was amazed at my capacity, after all this time, to still be awestruck by a piece of music. And then I heard Schubert's Quintet in C....well, holy cow, that's just BREATHTAKING. I mean, I think I'm starting with the basic big guys, and have no idea how long it will take me to even get to Mendelssohn or Brahms or Tchaikowsky. I appear to be without a map, which is kind of nice. Anyone have any favourite classical pieces? so far, for me, it's various Beethoven quartets (I can never remember the numbers!), the Schubert Quintet in C and Beethoven's Third. > > Anyway, Happy Easter to all. > > Adam K > > ____________________________________________________________ > FREE 3D MARINE AQUARIUM SCREENSAVER - Watch dolphins, sharks & orcas on your desktop! > Check it out at http://www.inbox.com/marineaquarium ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2012 03:00:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Jennifer Albert (no Email address) ******************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jennifer Albert Wed March 30 1966 Aries (w/Cancer rising!:) Warpaint Mon April 01 1991 Brilliant!
