So nice that you're subscribing to this list! And yes, I'm out and about, indeed. I have just temporarily deactivated my Facebook account because I need to finish a novel, and I am behind schedule. My life is oh so quiet now. I have never heard of Grimes, but this track sounds hugely promising. Thanks a lot for mentioning this artist. She's Canadian, as far as I can tell from this and that interview. Two of her albums are available through emusic, and I'm definitely going to download one of them. Be sure to check out Camille O'Sullivan, Rikke. I'm sure you'll find a lot to like there as well. All best from sunny Prenzlauer Berg, Leonora In my dreams I am not crippled. I picked this up from an Irish friend in Uganda a few years ago, and only recently has it been my go-to album to listen to on my ipod. For those who are fans of Jesca Hoop, this is for you. Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2012 17:34:22 -0600 From: Paul Jensen Subject: A few recent albums... * Lana Del Rey: "Born to Die"* No doubt in my mind this will be a strong contender for Album of the Year. I was a bit blown away by how hard I've fallen in love with this album. She has a lot of fun with her voice - sometimes sultry and wise, sometimes innocent and childlike. Similarly, she has fun playing with different styles - ballads, rock and roll, hip hop - there's a bit of everything on display here. Lyrically the album doesn't really break any new ground - but this album is so ambitious and satisfying in other ways, I can easily forgive a few uninspired lyrics! *Perfume Genius: "Put Your Back N 2 It"* Does the title of this album make you cringe? I think that's intentional. Only the brave and truly curious would check out an album with such a silly title, right? This guy is a serious talent. Probably the most inspiring gay artist to emerge in recent years. His voice is reminiscent of Sufjan's, on his more delicate songs (think "Casimir Pulaski Day") - or maybe a less flamboyant Antony. Most songs are accompanied by piano and synths. Ethereal atmospheres and heartbreaking, poetic lyrics. *Tennis: "Young and Old"* I admit, I miss the nautical theme of "Cape Dory" - part of what made their debut so fun. But this is a surprisingly strong batch of songs. Some tracks even remind me a bit of The Sundays. The more I listen to it, the more this album is growing on me. *Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny: "Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose" * Completely bizarre, and a bit bonkers. Could have huge ecto appeal - super quirky, full of strange lyrics. I find this album challenging, but quite listenable. Really ambitious. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #359 ***************************
