Today's Subjects: ----------------- Live Ecto Albums [Adam Kimmel ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2012 00:42:13 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Live Ecto Albums Ooohhh, seconds for both Joan Baez's Ring Them Bells and for Paul Simon's Live in Central Park, and thanks to Ellen and JoAnn for reminding me of their greatness. Paul Simon also has Live Rhymin' Simon which is also great (he brings on the Jesse Dixon singers and also does a fantastic gospel-style "Bridge Over Troubled Water), but the later one is more comprehensive. > From: Jeff Hanson > > The mention of Genesis reminded me of one of my favorite live albums-- > Renaissance, Live at Carnegie Hall. Crikey, that one was all over my college dorm back in '77, providing much-needed relief from REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent. As long as we're (kind of) talking prog, I'd like to put in a vote for Gentle Giant's Playing the Fool. This most eclectic of bands put on a great show, at once dazzlingly complex and musically intricate but all the time outrageous fun, and this captures all of this, including a salutory lesson for all bands: a brief instrumental called Breakdown in Brussels, basically Sweet Georgia Brown improvised by violinist Ray Shulman and guitarist Gary Green in a django/grappelli kinda way one night when the power went down one night halfway through the show.
