Today's Subjects: ----------------- Ren Harvieu & Lana del Rey [Leonora Christina Skov ] top 10 gigs of 2011 [Jason Gordon ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2012 08:50:44 +0100 From: Leonora Christina Skov Subject: Ren Harvieu & Lana del Rey I'm pretty sure Ren Harvieu and Lana del Rey will be big this year. I mentioned Lana del Rey on my best of-list as I have been listening to her first two singles a lot (Video Games http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO1OV5B_JDw and Blue Jeans http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t-I-Lqy06g) But I forgot to mention Ren Harvieu from Lancashire. She's just as brilliant. Last year, just as she was about to finish her debut album, she broke her spine, but now she's ready to take on the world. Here's her first single Through the Night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjE4AuEwZzQ And here is her fabulous Beatles cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpOrUIbM-Rg All best from Copenhagen,Leonora ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2012 03:00:00 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Jeanne Schreiter (no Email address) ******************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jeanne Schreiter Tue January 03 1967 Capricorn John Sandoval Wed January 04 1967 Capricorn Aly Fields Thu January 04 1990 Yield Paul Cohen Tue January 05 1954 Capricorn Tony Garrity Mon January 08 1962 Pool of Life Greg Bossert Tue January 09 1962 OfTheTimes Troy J. Bjork - @ Harpa, Reykjavik - biophilia needs to be seen live to be fully appreciated...the instrumentation, the voice, the songs just work better live...plus it was my first time seeing bjork ever, and standing directly at the front row of the stage a few feet from her was mesmerizing 2. Soley - @ Harpa, Reykjavik - stunning set from Soley - a quirky, elegant set that grew and grew 3. Einar Stray - @ Harpa, Reykjavik - hadnt heard anything but a youtube video or two prior to seeing him live...just 21, he's the real deal with wonderful chamber pop, oozing with musicality and interest 4. Glasser @ NASA, Reykjavik - lush, tribal, bouncy - made me dance through the whole set (and I dont dance) 5. Jenny Hval @ Harpa, Reykjavik - stunnning songs and what a voice. not easy to get into, but ultimately very rewarding...highly recommended if you like mary margaret o'hara. 6. Nedry @ NASA, Reykjavik - the future of trip-hop...if you like portishead, you'd love nedry. 7. Austra @ Grand Central, Miami - missed seeing Austra in both LA, and Iceland, but saw them in Miami a fwe weeks later...wonderful sound, great bunch of people too...would have been higher on the list if the venue wasnt so damn smoky 8. Of Monsters and Men @ Harpa, Reykjavik - off venue 30 minute set, but they are. just. so. damn. good. i'm guessing they will be hitting the big time here shortly (their wonderful debut album, my head is an animal has a forthcoming us release)...they dont break new ground musically, but are a whole lot of fun. 9. Lay Low @ Glaumbar, Reykjavik - the lovely lovisa taking her icelandic spin on americana with a dash of soul thrown in. 10. SBTRKT @ NASA, Reykjavik - not my usual cup of tea, but these two guys kill it live [check out their track Wildfire with Yumi of Little Dragon contributing the vocals...a ton of fun] Honorable Mentions: Joan as Police Woman/Rachel Cantu @ somewhere in LA, Sofia Talvik @ some random bar in Lake Worth FL, Puzzle Muteson @ Bio Paradis, Reykjavik, Carina Round @ somewhere in LA - ditched seeing Austra to catch Carina again after not having seen her for many years, could have been higher on the list if she wasnt splitting the bill/alternating songs with Sierra Swan (who i dont think is 10% as talented as Carina) biggest disappointment, not being able to get in to see Oy in Reykjavik...looked like there was an impossible queue to get into the venue...only found out the next day that someone inside fainted and most of the back of the room cleared out to let in paramedics/smoke a lot outside...Oy played to a mostly empty venue - -jason np Atoi - Waves of Past Relations ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #295 ***************************
