You'll see me and woj. Had no idea this was happening, but it's definitely on our calendar now!! Thanks for the heads up! There's been quite a little Kate Bush musical moment in the NYC scene recently. We're kicking ourselves for blowing off the Losers' Lounge Tribute at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC a couple weeks ago. We really should've gotten off our asses and gone to that, sigh. They are still my all-time favourite band, and the last time I saw them live was back in, um, 2001, I think, when they did a warm-up gig in London (at the now defunct Astoria). There were people who'd flown down from Scotland in that queue. Ellen, who saw them live many times in Philadelphia in the '70s and then later in Denver and Boulder in the '80s. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2011 10:55:44 -0500 From: katherine Subject: really preliminary best of 2011 So this is a really preliminary list, as in this is the first time I have committed a list to "paper" and I am kind of scared that I even managed to do it this year. There are seven albums that are definitely going to be on there. Eventually, there will be 10, for totally arbitrary reasons. But anyway, those seven, with really preliminary thoughts: Kate Bush - *50 Words for Snow* -- Gorgeous. Comparison point: the second half of *Aerial*. There are a ton of things nobody has yet said about this album but I'm waiting until a proper writeup for those (feel free to ask me off-list though! I have a GRAND THEORY.) Patrick Kelleher - *Golden Syrup* -- My favorite Irish album of the year. Since I just mentioned Kate Bush PJ Harvey - *Let England Shake* -- Fantastic, as usual, a slap to the face of "WHY ARE THERE NO PROTEST ALBUMS ANYMORE," something you will like if you didn't like *White Chalk* (although I did!) Ladytron - *Gravity The Seducer* -- The comedown after *Velocifero*, which is probably why people aren't liking it as much. I think it's fantastic. Austra - *Feel It Break* -- It's really bizarre in the best way to see how much Katie Stelmanis has broken out. If you are irritated by the Ladytron album you might not be irritated to this. EMA - *Past Life Martyred Saints* -- Lisa Germano. That is to say, Lisa Germano is not involved in this at all (I think). But it's the same feel as *Happiness* or *Geek the Girl.* Katy B - *On a Mission* -- Lots of hype in certain circles, worth all of it. I still need to spend more time with the Laura Marling, Bjork, St. Vincent, Patrick Wolf and Tori Amos, but based on singles they'll probably make the list. (Especially the Patrick Wolf.) Others that might make it: Tieranniesaur - s/t (Irish pop group; album's all over the place); Zola Jesus - *Conatus *(is Zola Jesus); Wild Flag - s/t (members of Sleater-Kinney, Helium, etc in a supergroup); Charlotte Martin - *Dancing on Needles*; Christine Fellows - *Femmes de Chez Nous;* Nicola Roberts - *Cinderella's Eyes* (basically Siobhan Donaghy except out of Girls Aloud, not Sugababes, but I know a lot of you liked *Ghosts*); a lot of albums I probably forgot. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2011 11:35:44 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Hello Seahorse?
