Today's Subjects: ----------------- Re: Today's your birthday, friends... [Seneca Spurling Subject: Re: Today's your birthday, friends... Wow. Maybe we should start planning a 30 year celebration! Although we're now a much smaller list with less traffic, I'm so glad some of us are still here, and I appreciate everyone whether you've been here 28 years or have joined more recently. But as today's the list's birthday, I'll focus on those of us who have been here a long time. So much in my life has changed since I started this list, but my love of Happy's music and my passion for inclusion have not. When I started the list, I was 21, recently married, and working as a unix sysadmin at Rutgers University. I was active back then on rec.music.gaffa, the news group for Kate Bush fans. Vickie Williams introduced us to Happy's music, and I fell in love. Many others did too, and our talk about Happy on the Kate group began to bother some Kate fans who felt the talk about Happy was inappropriately dominating the conversation that they preferred would be about Kate. I could respect that the intent of that particular news group was to talk about Kate Bush, but I wanted a place where folks interested in this kind of music generally could talk about what they were into, with discussion not limited to any one topic. And as someone with a passion for peace, respecting others, and inclusivity, it was important to me that anyone be welcome to join the list - if there's any requirement at all it's that you behave respectfully toward all others on the list. No flame wars allowed. With that one rule and the theme of what came to be known as "ectophilic" music, the list was born! I mentioned that back then I was married. Unfortunately that marriage had not been a good choice for me. In 1994 I left. I left everything. I moved to San Francisco from New Jersey. I got a new job. And I took a break from managing the list, which was much more active back then. Greg, Meredith, and Woj kept things going and I'm incredibly grateful to them all, especially Meredith and Woj who maintain the list to this day! Some of my favorite memories are from meeting other ectophiles in person, and other aspects of the community we've shared, like sending photos of groups of us wearing ecto t-shirts and holding signs with messages to others in the group. It's amazing to me that this community is still here. Thank you to each of you! - -seneca PS: I owe you a write-up of the recent Security Project show in Portland. I drove up there to see it, and it was one of the best shows I've been to in ages! PPS: For those of you who are newer to the list and don't know me as well but have read that the list was started by Jessica Koeppel, that's me, that's my birth name. Oops, sent that from my old email address. My name is now legally Seneca Spurling and the old email address is deprecated, but I still log into it sometimes to check if there's anything important still going to the old address. And gmail doesn't make it obvious which account you're in! Obviously i need to get the old address off the list so this doesn't happen ;) - -seneca On Tue, Jun 18, 2019, 9:09 AM Seneca Spurling wrote: > Wow.
