Today's Subjects: ----------------- January/February 2019 in music [JoAnn Whetsell ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2019 15:15:49 +0000 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: January/February 2019 in music For January I was most looking forward to Sharon Van Etten's Remind Me Tomorrow, which I like, especially the songs "Seventeen" and "Comeback Kid." It's a strong album. But it was overshadowed by the surprise return of Emily Bezar and her wonderful album _Out of the Moment_. It is such a delight to have new music by Emily. The songs on this album hearken back Moon in Grenadine, Four Walls Bending, and Angels' Abacus, which is just fine by me as I LOVE LOVE LOVE those albums. And I love this one too. Even as it reaches back, it still sounds fresh. The interlude "Treeburst," for example, is different from anything she's done before. I've been listening to the album a lot and the title track as well as "Motherlode," "Skyline," "Quarter Moon" have separated themselves the most so far. https://emilybezar.bandcamp.com/album/out-of-the-moment [https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1058857751_5.jpg] Out of the Moment, by Emily Bezar 15 track album emilybezar.bandcamp.com My favorite new discovery of the month was Nicola Cruz's _Siku_ courtesy of NPR. This is just a really cool album by an Ecuadorian artist who plays the siku, a type of traditional wind instrument, hard to describe, but if you like hybrids of traditional folk music being updated with electronics, check it out. This little review really fails to do it justice, and I highly highly recommend it. https://nicolacruz.bandcamp.com/ https://www.npr.org/2019/01/26/688813284/nicola-cruz-merges-electronic-and-fo lk-music-with-the-use-of-cave-acoustics [https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a4099083217_5.jpg] Nicola Cruz Gabriel Santos Nicola Cruz has expanded his sonic palette even further with this particular album. Perhaps it's the presence of more collaborators than his previous records, but the songs in this particular record have an added breeziness. nicolacruz.bandcamp.com February 22 (in other words, yesterday) saw a new Darlingside EP Look Up & Fly Away I was not expecting, so that was a nice surprise. Seems like a solid release. Also the debut release of Our Native Daughters, _Songs of Our Native Daughters_, a supergroup project led by Rhiannon Giddens that includes Allison Russell from Po' Girl and Birds of Chicago. This is a brilliant album both musically and lyrically for how it explores the African-American experience. I can't wait to dive deeper into it. You can read about it here even though you can't listen to it any longer: https://www.npr.org/2019/02/14/693624881/first-listen-our-native-daughters-so ngs-of-our-native-daughters [https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2019/02/11/thf037-native-daughters_wide-48b 5445b710da3b22be959add4435f68341fab82.jpg?s=1400] First Listen: Our Native Daughters, 'Songs Of Our Native Daughters' : NPR Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, Allison Russell and Leyla McCalla form a banjo-wielding supergroup dedicated to the history of both string-band music and black women in America. www.npr.org Also saw today that Le vent du nord dropped a new album Territoires on Feb 12 so I just got to listen to that, and it sounds excellent. https://leventdunord.bandcamp.com/album/territoires Is anyone going to the Littlefield show on May 15?
