Each playlist could only have tracks from albums released that month. I constructed each like an old fashioned mix CD, so most are only ~15 tracks, and sometimes as few as 10. Every Friday, I read reviews, I saved, I sifted, I sequenced. I agonized over arcs and transitions. I have never felt so informed regarding a year's new music, and still, there were wonderful things I missed, or bad calls I made to exclude material that just hadn't settled in yet. I did a pretty good job sharing these w/ ecto list each month until August, when I fell off, so some of these I'm sharing now for the first time here. I love all of these mixes, with my favorite months being March, May, September and October. Not surprisingly, these months probably also had the biggest number of ecto friendly releases. September, in particular, saw so much good stuff that I had to make two mixes ("The Strike" has more uptempo and melodramatic material, while "The Simmer" settles into a more mellow, reflective space), bringing the total number to 13. Then, after all 13 playlists were complete, I couldn't resist the desire to bring certain tracks or artists into proximity with one another across the months, and ended up making seven more theme-focused playlists. This was also an opportunity to use beloved alternative choice tracks from some of these albums, or to pull in some of the folks that I either missed the first time around, or that I made the very questionable decision to cut from what would've been their monthly. It was also a chance to put some of the most ecto-ish tracks on the same mixesbI'd say of the 7, "elecricize," "favoritize," "balladicize" and "roaricize" are the most Ecto (you'll see what I mean below). I tried to do youtube as well, but I get really frustrated when I can't find all of my tracks and it's just tedious to complete (only two tracks aren't on spotifyban October track by Circuit de Yeux (who I love... have we ever discussed her here?), and Happy's MOTHER STANDS FOR COMFORT cover w/ Security Project).
