[Security Project shows] The Reggie's show was greatbsorry not to have seen you, Paul, I had to leave pretty quickly after the concert, and I think Vickie said you were upstairs? I think Games Without Frontiers was my favorite song, if only because hearing Happy literally sing as both Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush brings to life some of the metaphors and comparisons we've been using for years to try to describe her freakish range (e.g. "Kate Bush and Annie Lennox dueting from the same body"). You could tell that Happy is having a great time, as we've been told. In this "frontwoman for a rock band" role, sometimes her stage swagger and movements are a little bit of an awkward imitation of "rockstar," but this is in my opinion totally endearing, esp. knowing what a tremendously lovable nerd she is. I did notice that she seemed slightly pitchier in her mid-range than I am used to hearing from her, and wondered if that was lingering sickness, since Vickie mentioned to me that she'd had a cold. Did you notice this? It's not present at all on the live-recorded versions of the songs on their album CONTACT, which are immaculate, and which I highly recommend downloading from bandcamp. ~Tim On Tue, Nov 28, 2017 at 12:02 AM, Paul Blair wrote: > Goodness -- I've seen Happy Rhodes perform twice with Security Project in > the past month, and haven't posted about it! [Security Project shows] I had been upstairs for the opener, but came down for the Security Project. As it turns out, I was standing right behind you and didn't know it -- when the show finished, I turned to talk to someone but saw you getting up out of the corner of my eye. I thought I'd be able to catch you later! With regard to the pitch, it was more of an issue at the Daryl's House show, but I didn't notice it so much at Reggie's. Some of that music has got to be really hard to sing, because the voice is doing one thing and the instruments are off doing something completely different, so after having heard them perform the same song a few times I've begun to see what I thought was discoordination as part of the music. But since you've listened to the songs on CONTACT that's clearly not what you mean. At Reggie's I did notice a few moments where she landed on a note just slightly to the side of where she needed to be, but modulated herself over to the right place so that it didn't wind up sounding off. The other thing that everyone notices about Happy is that she seems not to have aged at all, and whatever she's doing on that farm where she lives is keeping her amazingly fit and vigorous. Meredith said something about her having a portrait hidden away someplace, but we all know she put it on an album cover (points to Equipoise...). One thing I missed in this round of shows compared to last year: David Jameson didn't bring along his eigenharp, which is a luminous wonder. But the musical virtuosity of that band is just amazing; Trey Gunn on that Warr guitar is a sight to see.
