A lot of artists and labels have joined them with their shares. https://bandcamp.com/ There are a ton of great ectophilic artists there, so today's a great day to buy music from them. Here are a few of the artists I've bought from there (most of whom have pages on The Ectophiles Guide): Emma Ruth Rundle Emma McKenna (who has a brand-new EP there) Jorane Inga Liljestrom, Lemolo Kathryn Joseph Kate in the Kettle Chloe Charles Gaba Kulka Valravn Lisa Knapp Emily Portland Eefje de Visser Worm is Green Cheers! - --Neile ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2017 20:32:46 +0000 (UTC) From: Todd Pierce Subject: Jesca Hoop on NPR - and 2016 Hi everyone - I saw several mentions of Jesca Hoop in recent emails and wanted to let you all know that you can listen to her new album for free on NPR for at least the next week or so:http://www.npr.org/2017/02/02/512636457/first-listen-jesca-hoop-memories-are-now Todd PierceAsheville NC USA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2017 14:42:35 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Jesca Hoop on NPR - and 2016 Thanks for the heads up, Todd! > On Feb 2, 2017, at 12:32 PM, Todd Pierce wrote: > > Hi everyone - I saw several mentions of Jesca Hoop in recent emails and wanted to let you all know that you can listen to her new album for free on NPR for at least the next week or so:http://www.npr.org/2017/02/02/512636457/first-listen-jesca-hoop-memories-are-now > > Todd PierceAsheville NC USA ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2017 13:16:26 -0500 From: Jason Gordon Subject: Re: Allison Crutchfield? I know that they were in London a few years back, but I couldn't make that gig Today's email listed one date in England -- the Cecil Sharp House in London on the 2nd of April. I will be there. :) Check out the rest of the dates (even a Northern Irish date in Belfast!) here. http://overtherhine.com/shows/ Ellen - -- Ellen Rawson ellenr@fastmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2017 18:24:55 +0000 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: Re: looking back and ahead: 2016/7 Personally, I LOVE Austra (I was listening to the new album when Neile's message came in), but I can see how someone could have Tim's reaction. Another 2016 album I just discovered last night is Anna Ternheim's album, Live in Stockholm. It's livelier and more powerful than I thought it might be, given that her music is often understated and sad. Just today I found Iiris Viljanen's album Mercedes. This is a completely new discovery for me, and I haven't heard any of her other music. Some of her songs remind me of her fellow Finn Astrid Swan, and she seems quite ecto-friendly. Grungy sexy rock, and some pretty moments too though I'm there for the louder songs. If they were a new band in their early 20s, I'm sure people would be raving about this. Yes, Jewel. Ibm so glad someone else agrees with mebthis is definitley the most excited Ibve been about a Jewel record in a long time, though Ibve always been a fan. But this really brings back those early days, yet there is a maturity and a true hurt in this is almost visceral. Before she could act out the dramatic partsbon this album you feel them. And the arrangement on Nicotine Love is killer. Love Used to Be reminds me a bit of Jane Siberrybs Love is Everything, but dark. I think this will be in heavy heavy rotation for awhile. My musical obsession at the time was a new artist named Jewel, who I'd seen play a residency at the tiny C'est What bar in Toronto before she released Pieces of You, so I searched for her and landed on both the Ecto list and a Jewel list with about 30 users. They were the first forums I ever joined online, and I began trading Jewel tapes with a few people. In particular, I remember Neile Graham told me her favorite Jewel song was Nicotine Love, which might have been my first real online musical discovery before I started digging further into Ecto. > > In 1996, Pieces of You came out and then Jewel played her fabled Jewelstock performances in Bearsville NY, the upshot of which was supposed to be her next album, likely including some of those live recordings. I'm still here on Ecto, and I've remained connected to Jewel's EDA Facebook group, really just as a way to keep in touch with old friends. So it's no surprise that I've been ignoring all the growing chatter about Jewel's new album, Picking Up the Pieces, lately. > > Well, now Pandora has posted a preview of the new album here: > http://www.pandora.com/station/play/2803416198819340670 > > All I can say is this is the album Jewel should have made 19 years ago. As much as I've cooled on her in the ensuing years, this is so reminiscent of those Jewelstock performances it's just a feeling of sheer delight and nostalgia to hear her play these songs like this. The song that I took my Email address from, Carnivore, is on this album. And yes, Nicotine Love is finally on this album. > > Sometimes, life is like a circle. > > - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Sep 2015 10:23:42 +1000 From: Alexander Johannesen Subject: Re: Miley on Ecto? > i just never liked the sorta less talented artists make it big selling bawdy > sexuality. I think Miley is an interesting case. Yes, lots of sexual stuff, but it's countered by a whole lot of couldn't-give-a-crap. A modern sexual Cindy Lauper? :) > and i have nothing against sexuality. but i dislike crap that is encased in > trimmings that sell using sexuality. Yeah, but I'm not totally sure I agree that Miley is just a sexual thing. there's sex in there, goodness, yes - and I hate the whole fuck-doll image that sprouts here and there - but it's not exactly all she's playing on. She seems to have a lot of nerve and, well, fun. As in, feminist fun. Anyway, I'm seeing this from afar. Being in the thick of US culture, it would probably look different to me, as well.
