Fantastic, other than a few technical difficulties with Happy's mic in the first song, which threw her off on the second. Highlights for me: San Jacinto, Mother Stands for Comfort, Lay Your Hands On Me, Broadway Melody of 1974. What I'd have loved to hear, but didn't: Here Comes the Flood, Biko, Kiss of Life, One and Many, Mercy Street. After the show, I told Happy how great it was to hear her live again, and hoped that there'd be more. She said, As long as she's having fun, and right now, it's a lot of fun. Also got some tips on dealing w/ unconventional string sets from Mr. Gunn. Maybe I'll get my Stick in working order and learn to play it after all... So fantastic! And my partner and I managed to say hi to her on her way out from the back! She was so lovely and fun! I am not the biggest cryer, but this is the first time I'd ever had a chance to see her live, and I was crying legitimate tears of joy a couple times. The performances of Kate Bush's Mother, Ashes to Ashes and Collective heart are obvious stand outs, but as aPeter Gabriel fan I was so thrilled by the band's version of San Jacinto, one of my favorite songs of his. Games Without Frontiers was fantastic too. I liked the variety they played overall. Just so ecstatic I got to see her!!! I had a great time. The band went on at 11:30pm, half an hour after the scheduled start (and in general they were pretty punctual at that venue). This was unfortunate as many audience members didn't stick around from earlier shows, or left during the show, but there was still a good-sized crowd. I've heard that the people who wanted a Peter Gabriel recreation weren't happy with the idea of a woman singing, so I think that some of the people who left were also in that camp. Set list: 1. Lay your Hands on Me 2. Intruder 3. Family Snapshot 4. No Self Control 5. Humdrum 6. The Family and the Fishing Net 7. I Have the Touch 8. Wallflower 9. The Rhythm of the Heat 10. I Don't Remember 11. Mother Stands for Comfort 12. Red Rain 13. San Jacinto 14. Lead a Normal Life 15. Games Without Frontiers 16. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 17. Back in New York City At other shows they've been doing "Ashes to Ashes" and "Collective Heart" but I think they may have cut these because they started late. I got the impression Happy was the one who decided to make the cut, since after "Mother" there was some conversation between Happy and Trey Gunn and then they had to call Jerry Marotta back from the bar, which he wasn't expecting. "Mother" was extremely "ecto" -- weirdly otherworldly with Trey Gunn's spooky bass and David Jameson's eigenharp. Mike Weis put up a video of it from the Cleveland show on the "Happy Rhodes Fans" Facebook group. There are other videos there as well. I put up one of "Red Rain," but Happy's voice is much farther down in the mix than it sounded live. I wish I had time to redo the video and remix the audio but I don't think I will (if anyone wants to take on that job I'd be happy to provide the raw iPhone video file). Here's a video from the Milwaukee show that does a good job of communicating the sound and atmosphere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBvUtMgltZc Happy sang on everything except "Back in New York City." What can I say? I have missed that voice so much. And Happy is so incredibly young-looking on stage; it's as if she hadn't changed at all. (Meredith later commented "Maybe she has a portrait hidden away in a closet somewhere ..." Like this one, maybe: https://goo.gl/images/SOZvn2 ) I spoke with Happy briefly after the show. Someone asked her when we were going to see her performing her own music, and she gave a sardonic laugh. I'll be seeing her perform again at Daryl's House in Pawling on Wednesday evening. Definitely looking forward to repeating the experience, and hoping to hear the songs that were cut! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2016 22:30:13 -0700 From: jessica spurling Subject: Re: Well, it wasn't very nice of me to not post here (Security Project in Chicago) thank you paul & bernie for the reports. i'm so sad that I'm not going to be able to see any of these shows. oh if only they would come to the west coast. - -seneca On Fri, Oct 28, 2016 at 10:02 PM, Bernie Mojzes wrote: > Just home from Sellersville show.
