In German "oe" would normally be spelled with an umlaut o (an o with two dots over it) and is not phonetically the same as the sound "oh". As I learned it, umlaut o is prounounced by rounding your lips (as if to whistle) while saying the "oh" sound. English speakers not used to hearing the difference, however, will tend to hear it as "oh". If Mimi's last name is derived from German, it's diverged a bit from the likely original pronunciation. But that happens a lot. > On Sep 3, 2011, at 10:47 AM, Sue Trowbridge wrote: > > > Well, according to the ever-reliable Wikipedia, "Goese" rhymes with "hazy." > > > > --Sue > > > > On Sat, Sep 3, 2011 at 10:31 AM, Robert Lovejoy wrote: > >> Just curious, how does one pronouce Goese?
