Today's Subjects: ----------------- Canadian releases [JoAnn Whetsell ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 19 Aug 2011 19:22:22 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: Canadian releases First, a belated thank you to Leslie and Jason for answering my question about Canadian release dates. Now, some preliminary reviews. The albums below are all available on Spotify, which is where I listened to them. JORANE - UNE SORCIERE COMME LES AUTRES (2011) Looking forward to spending more time with this album as I'm really enjoying it. Includes a lovely French-language version of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne." Funny that just a few weeks ago I was re-acquainting myself with Jorane by listening to all of her albums (16mm is still my favorite, but I gained a new appreciation for Vers a Soi), not knowing that she had a new one out. OH SUSANNA - SOON THE BIRDS (2011) Oh Susanna is an artist I like but have never really loved. I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. Will have to see how much it stays with me on subsequent listens. REBEKAH HIGGS - LITTLE VOICE (2010) and ODD FELLOWSHIP (2011) Odd Fellowship was just released this month. It includes all of the songs from the Little Voice (itself a strong EP) except "Asleep All Winter." Fun album, a worth successor to her debut album, which I love. EMM GRYNER - GEM AND I and STRAY BULLETS EP Lots of solid pop. Gem and I is interesting because it's an album of duets, so the other artists bring new flavor to Emm's sound. KINNIE STARR - A DIFFERENT DAY Disappointing. More subdued or laidback or something. I preferred the aggressive pop/trip-hop sound of Anything.
