Today's Subjects: ----------------- How weird/nuts is Jane Siberry right now? [Tim Jones-Yelvington ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 23 Feb 2016 11:04:03 -0600 From: Tim Jones-Yelvington Subject: How weird/nuts is Jane Siberry right now? Has anyone seen her recently, or heard any of the Ulysses's Purse material? She's in town this weekend, and having already seen and enjoyed her twice, I honestly can't decide whether to get tickets. She will always always be a favorite, but some of WITH WHAT SHALL I KEEP WARM bordered on unlistenable, for me. ~Tim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Feb 2016 12:52:25 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: How weird/nuts is Jane Siberry right now? Yes, I went when she was in New York recently. If you've seen her within the past ten years, she's continuing in the same vein. I've seen her pretty often during that time and find that the stream-of-consciousness stuff works better live than it does on recordings. However, at this point I've experienced it enough that I'm seeing the strategies underneath the shtick, and it's getting a little old. The beginning of the show is always a little off, where you can't tell if she's in tune or off time or if the music is just supposed to sound that way; it's chaotic and stream of consciousness. But it's all very deliberate and scripted, which you sometimes learn when something happens on stage that she's not ready for. (Or when she says, "I'm going to play this song badly now, which is actually a lot harder than playing it well...") As the show progresses things gradually get more coherent so that by the end she's singing some of her old material and everything is harmonious. There is some new material, and if you haven't already seen her a bunch of times and you're open to the format I think it's worth it. For those who have seen her before, you'll get drive-by appearances from a lot of old friends, including the dog named Magic, the Scottish children, etc. Best lines from the recent show: "God is good. God is great. God is great--in bed..." (and later) "Spirituality is the ultimate hedonism." Subject: Re: How weird/nuts is Jane Siberry right now? I posted about the album before, it's much more song-ish and plaintive than the Queens trilogy. Everything You Knew as a Child is "single material" if Jane put out singles these days, of the rest I think only one or two tracks have percussion. The album closer is a duet with k.d. lang. There's only one spoken word track on it if I recall correctly. I can't speak about the tour though as I'm stuck on another continent. Andy - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: A. Date: 7 February 2016 at 13:20 Subject: Jane Siberry's Ulysses' Purse album and tour To: ecto@smoe.org Jane started her tour in support of the new album Ulysses' Purse last Wednesday. Here's the rest of the tour dates: http://www.flemingartists.com/artists/itineraries/js-itin.html The album is already out for Kickstarter backers and can be purchased at the shows but the official wide release date is February 26. Reportedly, during the shows Jane mentioned it's meant to be her last proper album and she's asking everyone to spread the word about it. The record is truly a thing of beauty and it does have an air of finality to it. It's over an hour long but it's worth taking in as a whole at least for the first time.
