These are the 2011 releases I have loved enough to buy them twice: 1. KEREN ANN - 101 By far my favourite album of 2011. She has stopped sounding like Mazzy Star (not that I minded her soundling like them), her style is truly varied, a bit retro, fantastic lyrics, great voice, very stylish. She reminds me a bit of A Girl Called Eddy now. You simply need to give her a listen. FAVOURITE TRACKS: BLOOD ON MY HANDS, STRANGE WEATHER, 101 2. EMA - PAST LIFE MARTYRED SAINTS Definitely not easy listening. Seriously talented, pissed off woman from South Dakota, often and rightfully compared to early PJ Harvey. There's so much raw emotion here, the songwriting is deeply personal, even private, and the album brims with a quiet noisiness. It's really a surprising album. It keeps growing on me. FAVOURITE TRACKS: BREAKFAST, CALIFORNIA, THE GREY SHIP 3. MARISSA NADLER - MARISSA NADLER Someone here on ecto didn't like this album as much as Little Hells, but I find this album so much more accomplished. Finally I am getting what Marissa Nadler is all about. I love the Gothic universe she's creating, I love the texture of her sound, and her songwriting has definitely improved. I have listened to this a hundred times the last couple of months. FAVOURITE TRACKS: BABY I WILL LEAVE YOU IN THE MORNING, WEDDING, IN YOUR LAIR, BEAR 4. SARABETH TUCEK - GET WELL SOON I loved her first album, and this one is even better. Tucek has described it as "an impressionist rendering of a time ruled by grief," and rightly so. She's mourning the death of her father here, and there are lots of ruminations on death and loss throughout. The album is often mellow, but it is never depressing. I love the quality of her voice, it is quite similar to Cat Power's, and there's a remarkable grace and warmth to her material. FAVOURITE TRACKS: GET WELL SOON, THE DOCTOR, THE FIREMAN 5. THE UNTHANKS - LAST These sisters have so much going for them: Great harmonies, great traditional material. I adored Here's the Tender Coming, and I like Last a lot. However, I do believe they drown most of their songs in violins this time, and also too many of the tracks are incredibly slow and blend too easily together. I haven't yet managed to listen to it all in one sitting. FAVOURITE TRACK: QUEEN OF HEARTS, LAST I have raved about these 2010/2011-albums earlier so Ill just mention that I still listen to them a lot: ANNA CALVI - ANNA CALVI RUMER - SEASONS OF MY SOUL BEACH HOUSE - TEEN DREAM AGNES OBEL - PHILHARMONICS JULIA STONE - THE MEMORY MACHINE NINA NASTASIA - OUTLASTER CARO EMERALD - DELETED SCENES FROM THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR ZOLA JESUS - STRIDULUM II (I might not have raved about her. But she is fantastic. Wonderful, deep voice) And some emusic finds worth checking out: BELLA HARDY - SONGS LOST AND STOLEN. Powerful voice, nice traditional sounding material. Reminds me a bit of The Unthanks. GAZELLE TWIN - THE ENTIRE CITY. Reviewers compare her to Fever Ray. She hasn't quite grabbed me yet, but I plan to listen some more. EMI MEYER - SUITCASE OF STONES. Japanese/American jazz singer. Easy listening in the vein of Norah Jones. SHE MAKES WAR - DISARM Post-grunge grrrl with fairly interesting material. I haven't yet listened to the latest releases by Priscilla Ahn, Mara Carlyle, Austra, Alele Diane and the Wild Divine, and Eleanor Friedberger. I am looking forward to them all. Finally I still think SHANNON McARDLE's SUMMER OF THE WHORE from 2008 is possible one of the rawest, finest albums I have ever heard. It's available through emusic, too. I listen to it daily, and I don't seem to get tired of it. The title track is particularly gorgeous.
