A caveat: I'll have to admit, Amy Whinehouse is one of those artists I can't "get" and I have an almost Pavlovian aversion to --- her voice actually and inexplicably makes my skin crawl. I do feel sad for her, however: nobody should die that young and she obviously had talent that appealed to people. It's a sad waste of a life. And there, last time, I wrote about both Harry Nillsson and Phil Ochs, two other artists who let drink and depression get the better of them. Which actually brings me to another point: As she died at the age of 27 people are already bracketting her with Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison, but it's a specious comparison. All three of those had a significant and influential body of work behind them at that age and at least the former two had promise of excellent work to come (Joplin had just completed what is arguably her best album yet, Pearl). As sad as it is, I think a little perspective is needed. In the meantime, Thea Gilmore has just given birth to a baby boy, Asher. Apparently it wasn't an easy birth and it's going to take her a while to recuperate. And, while I'm here, I'd just like to go off-ecto and give a shout out to the people of Norway. Peace and understanding be with you all. Actually, I think this is as ecto as it comes. My thoughts are with the people of Norway, too, and especially with the families of the victims. I can't imagine the pain they must be feeling. - --Neile ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jul 2011 09:16:05 -0700 (PDT) From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?anna_maria_stj=E4rnell?= Subject: new stuff Hi. I really like the Jenny Hval album too.. and her earlier stuff. Loving an album that Aileen Paron has done as Scarlet Season. Electronic pop with soul. But I eventually bought a copy, and I'm glad I did. The songs on this CD are not as heavily produced as Neptune City, but it's a solid release. I particularly like "Cry, Cry, Cry" (very catchy), "You Come To Me" (what energy!), and "My Baby Don't Lie" ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #157 ***************************
